“Tuscan Paradise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 2, 2008

The highlight of our family's European adventure was a 5 night stay at Ponte a Nappo. We stayed in the Nespolo Apartment which was very spacious for four people. The views looking up the hill to San Gimignano and across the Tuscan countryside are simply breathtaking. The dynamic Carla and her two sons Andrea and Francesco provide a wonderful welcoming enviroment. This was the perfect place to base ourselves and we made day trips to Sienna, Florence, the Chianti region and Volterra. In the evenings we would walk up the hill to eat in San Gimignano. As most of the tourists have left by evening this was the perfect time to explore this magical medieval town.

We traveled in a group of 4 adult women and stayed at Ponte a Nappo for 6 nights. Our bedroom windows had a view of the Hill town of San Gimignano and the Toscana vinyards and olive trees. The days and nights were quiet. The family who operates this business (especially Carla and Francesco) know how to treat their guests. It is worth it to learn some Italian in order to chat a bit at breakfast with Carla. This "farmhouse" is within easy walking distance of San Gimignano and a nice grocery store if you want fruit and cheese for your mini-fridge. We rented a car and had no problems finding our way. The pool and yard are well-maintained but it was too chilly for swimming at end of September. Staying here is like staying with family.

We stayed in the Tortoli Rooms on the town square, my wife and I in the Bifore Room overlooking the square while our friends stayed in the Bellavista Room across the hall overlooking the valley. They were both outstanding, not just in the views but in their generous size and clean, charming appointments. However, you need to be aware that there is no lift in this building, and there are 47 steps up to that level. We were only able to stay one night so we were required to pay cash. We were able to drive in with our luggage (an experience all by itself!) but parked on the ring road outside the walls overnight. But to be inside San Gimignano in the evening after the tours are gone, and out and about in the morning before they descend again is a delight. Our morning happened to be market day, setting up literally under our window.

  • Liked — the beauty of the experience, inside and out of the hotel
  • Disliked — the steps in this building would be a challenge for some folks
