“Superbly ornate!”
Reviewed March 1, 2013 via mobile

Very extravagant and beautifully detailed dome. Nobody ever mentions this in the guide books, but it is a wonder in itself besides the leaning tower.

“Impressive Duomo”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Very beautiful and impressive Duomo. It looks fantastic in the sunlight. We visited this and the Duomo in Florence, both are very different and beautiful, but for me this one in Pisa has a far more interesting and ornate interior.

“Magnificent outside, disappointing inside!”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

This is a really impressive building on the outside, being located next to the Leaning Tower on the Campo dei Miracoli. It is the only building on this site which is free to visit.

We found the inside of the Duomo much less impressive. This was not helped by the fact that when we were in Pisa, you were only able to access the very rear of the Duomo with the vast majority of the inside area being cordoned off. It was not clear whether this was a permanent arrangement, but the atmosphere was ruined by the presence of two uniformed guards who appeared to be eager to apprehend anyone who tried to cross the cordon, or take photos.
Another small area of the Duomo was accessible for private prayer.

Overall, the Duomo inside was very disappointing. It is much better simply to take in the external views of the building.

“Simply Classically Beautiful”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

A very traditional Duomo interior, beautifully created, amazing detail. Take your time and enjoy it. Only thing I would add is that you cannot take photos inside so get some good postcards at the stalls outside.

“As long as you're there.”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

I've said a similar thing in my other reviews of the area. If this cathedral were anywhere else, by itself, it wouldn't be as impressive. However, with the backdrop including the leaning tower and baptistry, it makes quite the trio.

I was impressed with the inside of the church, especially the carved pulpit on the left side of the sanctuary.

Entrance to the cathedral is free, but you do need to go to the ticket office and get a ticket to get in. (That way they can track how many people are visiting.) With the rest of the plaza, it's worth a look inside.
