Every half hour one of the guards demonstrates the echo effect in the Baptistery. He sings single notes that form a chord as the echo affect is heard. One of our guide books explains that the building itself was designed to be a musical instrument. Get to the Baptistery right before the 1/2 hour, hear the demonstration, then visit the Baptistery and if you want you can stay to hear the next demonstration. One guard's voice is much stronger than the other.

Love the view of the Cathedral from the second floor window. Unlike the Cathedral, there's not a lot to see but it is beautifully built. Amazing place to listen to the singing, the acoustic is incredible. I was sitting on the second floor when the singing started and enjoyed it without looking down until the singing was finished.

This is a beautiful building in its own right, and sits perfectly alongside the Duomo and the Tower.

Make sure you are there at the hour or half hour. The attendant shuts the doors, and calls for silence. She then sings a series of notes to demonstrate the perfect acoustics of the building. Breathtaking!

For me the best reason to visit the Baptistery of St John is to climb the steps to the second floor for the view of the Duomo with the Leaning Tower behind it. (see picture) There is one window looking directly at the Duomo which they have cut out a small piece of the metal screen so you can take a picture without the screen interference. Also the view from upstairs of the very austere interior of the Baptistery is lovely, peaceful, but blistering hot the day I visited.

I liked the exterior better, missed the singing but enjoyed the views. The line to purchase the many combo tickets that is by the Leaning Tower was very long. I suggest you use the ticket area in Piazza dei Miracoli at the Museo delle Sinopie,(where all the booths are selling souvenirs) no one was there and you can purchase all your ticket combos. Otherwise consider buying tickets online and miss the long lines. Our hotel offered advance tickets if requesting them 24 hours in advance.

The tower is why you go to Pisa, but the baptistry is amazing as well. Try to be there when the staff demonstrate the echo.
