“Fantastic views”

A rustic farmhouse with fabulous views of the plain of Pisa. We could see the leaning tower from the terrace! Convenient situation for visiting Lucca and Pisa and also an attractive part of the coastline which is a protected natural park, all of these are worth a visit. There are other seaside towns in easy reach too. Florence is also an easy drive away as are other well known Tuscan places. You can also use the local rail service to explore.

It is quite an adventure getting to La Lucertola; up a very steep gravel track through the olive groves with five hairpin bends. Two of these bends require two manoeuvres to get around! It certainly made me hold my breath on several occasions.

Colin and Luisa are able to provide you with useful local knowledge to plan your trips. We enjoyed the company of the all seeing and all knowing Reg, the large friendly ginger cat. The pool was very cooling in the heat and the views from the pool area lovely, although the pool was smaller than the photos would suggest.

“Fabulous, just fabulous”
Reviewed September 4, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

The downside first: the road up to La Lucertola requires good tyres and some nerve. It's a bit hairy, with sharply angled bends all the way up and the road is a tad bumpy here and there. But it is doable and we did do it, daily, even though some us often elected to walk some or part of the way up.

However, this is a minor caveat, since once you're up there, La Lucertola s pretty well perfect. Comfortable, well-equipped house, with a terrace offering a fantastic view of Pisa (yes, you can see That Tower) and beyond to the sea and the scent of wild herbs in the air. The pool is a welcome respite from the heat and essentiak after a day spent visiting some of Italy's loveliest cities. Florence is an hour by train and Lucca is just twenty minutes drive.

Colin, Luisa and Max are excellent hosts and offer the added advantage not only of their delightful cats but also a recording studio (teenage boy heaven).

So, a blissful fortnight and one we'd very much like to repeat.

“Outstanding”
Reviewed September 3, 2012 for a stay in August 2012

What a lovely place to stay in, peaceful, relaxing, with fantastic views. You can see as far as Corsica (on a clear day). You can even see the Tower of Pisa from the bedroom windows. The farm house was charming and offered all the amenities one would expect. Loungers were provided for parents to curl up on and watch the stars with a glass or two. For the kids, 8 and 5, there was a plunge pool. This was great as it wasn't too deep for the youngest and provided a welcome release from the hottest of Tuscan suns. You can walk in the woods behind the farmhouse, pick your own fruit and veg, BBQ and even try out the pizza oven. There are so many things to do and see, from medieval towns and bike rides along the walls, wine tasting in the nearby vineyard, markets, churches, the beaches, rafting in the river. The food and local restaurants were outstanding as were all the Italians we met. The owners Colin and Luisa and their son Max were excellent hosts and were on hand to answer any questions. Luisa was also able to do a bit of shopping for us before we arrived and was also able to provide a reputable garage for some repairs. These are the little touches that make you feel at home and truly looked after.

“An Idyllic and beautiful place”
Reviewed November 10, 2011 for a stay in November 2011

The farmhouses are set at the top of a steep climb up a Tuscan hill. The drive is a little daunting at first, and if your party isn't too large I'd definitely hire a 4x4 to make it as easy as possible. The views are spectacular, and can be seen from both bedrooms, and is the way any romatic-at-heart would like to wake up I'm sure! It was a short drive to Pisa, Lucca and Florence and all were well worth a visit. The property was comfortable and clean and following advice from the owner, Luisa, I even tried cooking a few new vegetables from the garden which guests were welcome to help themselves to, and it was truly delicious. We fired up the built-in pizza oven as well, and cremated a few pizzas of our own. The second attempt was better! We had excellent weather and sat outside talking until late. Luisa, Max and Colin were there for a few friendly words sometimes, but did not intrude on the rental at all and allowed you to treat it as your home from home. For me there weren't any real negatives to report as such. The pool was closed, which we didn't know about, but Tuscany had had awful weather the week before our arrival so it was not unreasonable for the landlord to assume swimming season was over, even though we had a beautiful weather week. We struggled to find La Lucertola initially, as it is at a fork in the road, following another fork. Given a 50:50 guess, we chose the wrong fork both times! Fortunately we met previous guests coming down the hill and a two minute conversation found us on the right path. The car park is at the bottom of a steep climb. Its only about 20m away from the house, but I worried my parents, both pensioners, would find it a bit daunting. They did, but are still up for a challenge. I wouldn't want to push a wheelchair or similar up it though. I loved this place, and would recommend it to anyone.
