“On The Way to the Leaning Tower...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 9, 2014

Imagine my surprise and delight to come upon this gorgeous little church sitting right on the side of the Arno River! I had not read about this church, and was not able to enter, but feasted my eyes instead on the incredible Gothic architecture. Whether or not you're able to go in, take a moment to admire the asymmetrical windows and just drink in the beauty of this little charmer by the sea.

“Lovely exterior, but interior closed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013

This beautiful little chapel, on one bank of the River Arno, was built to house what was believed to be one of the thorns from Christ's crown of thorns. The road has to depart from the river bank to go round it, so it's easy to veiw the exterior, but we were disappointed that it was closed & there was no information to indiacte when it might be open.

“exquisite classic pisan gothic church”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 6, 2013

The exquisite church of Santa Maria della Spina is one of the prettiest fairy-tale churches in Italy.
Designed in classic Pisan Gothic style, the building dates back to 1230, with Gothic enlargements in the 1350s. Originally, the building sat close to the river, and it was moved up to its present site on the riverside walkway in 1871.
The interior is less ornate than the fanciful exterior. Santa Maria della Spina is rebuilt into the promenade wall lining the River Arno. On the opposite side of the river to the Piazza dei Miracoli, it is around 800 m (half a mile) from the station

“Disappointing”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 27, 2013

Visited here on a day trip from Florence. Was disappointed as although it was a beautiful building it was not open and not signage to say if and when it was. The guide books rated it highly due to having an apparent thorn from Christs crown.

“beautiful little church”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 27, 2013

We managed to find this beautiful little church we spied it from the main bridge over the Arno we crossed and walked along the riverside to the next bridge and crossed back to it. The architecture was awesome. We would have liked to have gone in as there is supposed to be one of the thorns from the crown of thorns but there didn't seem to be anyone around at the time we were there pity.
