Owner description: The Tower of Pisa (180 feet in height) was begun in 1173 and, due to its faulty foundation on unstable soil, leans precariously more than 14 feet out of line, preventing visitors from climbing its 300-plus steps to the top.

“Quick Stop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

Not much more than a quick stopover and photo opportunity but well worth it. The first glimpse through the arch as you approach the western entrance is stunning. Not only does it really lean but the detail they put into the tower is outstanding. There really is not much in and around Pisa except for the Leaning Tower and Duomo. On our visit they had the hawkers back behind a fence and to the side which was really appreciated as the hawkers outside the walls and around the parking lots are relentless. No fee to just walk around the grounds and for us that was more than enough.

“A must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

The tower is beautiful. Granted it is somewhat expensive to get inside it and climb to the top but the money is well worth it. You usually only do these things once! The views from the top of the tower are spectacular. There is a lot of steps you must climb to get to the top so keep that in mind if you are considering climbing it.

“loved climbing the tower”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2013

Pisa was at the end of our holiday after visiting Venice, Lake Garda and Florence. We had made up our minds before arriving that we would be happy just to look at the tower but didn't feel the need to climb it. As soon as we saw it however we changed our minds and said that we had to climb it. We purchased a ticket to climb the tower, go into the Duomo (this was free but you needed a ticket), the Baptistery & the Monumental church yard. We were given a timed ticket for approx. 30mins after we had purchased but we could have chosen any time. From entering the tower at ground floor you can instantly tell it is on a tilt, it was a very odd feeling.
We were given a very short talk regarding the tower and then we proceeded to climb. This was strange as you can tell that the building is on a tilt as you climb. From leaving the bottom to returning to the ground it roughly takes 30 mins as you are ushered along which was fine.
No bags are allowed so you must make sure you put them in the lockers.
We enjoyed all the sites around the tower and we were pleased that we climbed it as we are not necessarily likely to return

“A must see!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

The leaning tower is definitely a must see for that classic photo of you helping hold it up. It's also great fun just to watch the other tourists doing all sorts of crazy things for their photos. We were probably in Pisa a total of two hours. We definitely could have spent more time exploring the rest of the town, but we decided that we would rather go ahead and get to our next stop.

“Wish I Would've Seen More of the Town and Less Tower!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2013

By far the most disappointing stop on my first European trip. I hate to say it but these otherwise beautiful grounds felt like a tourist trap! We were with a tour company and only had an hour and a half to explore so of course we went straight to the tower.....so did all of the other tourists!!! I can't tell you how instantly sick I became of seeing people taking pictures of others like they were holding up the tower! Row after row of aggressive souvenir vendor tents stuffing items in your face for purchase! Ughh!!! I couldn't wait to get out of there!

If I ever found myself here again I'd skip the tower and spend more time looking at the town itself, beautiful cathedrals and baptisteries. Of course you can never know that until you experience it for yourself and of course if you're there you're going to see the tower. Just be mentally prepared for the tourist circus it is.
