If you are lucky, you get there when the owner is absent: he is one of these people that pretends of being funny when is simply nasty.
However, his daughter in the kitchen makes up for the rudeness with delicious dishes, all made with fresh local ingredients, according to old recipes and seasonal appropriateness.
The staff is very kind, reasonable choice of wines (including a very decent house wine), outdoor patio, and filtered water for free.

I reconfirm my previous review. Close to Normale a few steps from the Tower. In these cities, with many tourists, the risk is to go in trivial restaurants, made just for tourists. In this, you can enjoy traditional dishes at reasonable prices. We often go to lunch and the menu, handwritten on two boards (one inside and one outside), has few dishes and some sweets, simple names, but try them, and you come back. For abstainers, the water is free.

We stumbled upon this restaurant while wandering the back streets of the university district. Great atmosphere unusual decor pleasant staff and freshly cooked food. If its on the menu try the chestnut soufflé with ricotta cheese. Yes it is a dessert.
If you don't want pizza try this little gem

We came across this restaurant whilst we were wandering looking for another restaurant, its kind of tucked away and is inconspicuous.
What drew us in was the sign that said 'no pizza'. That might sound mad, BUT in Pisa there are so many tourist places which churn out pizza and chips its a bit depressing, and it's hard to know where to eat, even based on reviews.
We took a risk and decided to go for it, and we weren’t disappointed. We had the best meal of our trip in Italy here, it was absolutely gorgeous. The menu was small, again a massive plus point for me, there were about 10 dishes in total, and all menu's were hand written on a board so you knew it was all cooked fresh.
We started with cheese which came with bread and home made sweet chilli chutney, it was absolutely divine, and the wine was a suggestion and was delicious, from then on we simply had a wonderful tasty and delicious meal. I highly recommend this place, it wasn't expensive either, its very unassuming, but it felt like we were eating somewhere where the heart was in the food, and I can rarely say this and I travel alot.
If you visit Pisa and you want to escape eat here. Its a hidden Gem.
