“The highlight of our trip!!!!”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We had an incredible week at Casa Bici Buti. Each day was "the best". The house is lovely, historic and renovated to perfection, while still maintaining the old charm of the original structure. It is quiet and very, very comfortable. Our room and bathroom were wonderful. The location of the house is quintessential Tuscany, olives and grapes growing up the side of the hill, sprinkled with lovely wildflowers and footpaths. Roosters crow, neighbors wave while out in their gardens. It is absolutely enchanting! We felt embraced by the warmth of the local people that we met, whether dining out at the amazing local restaurants, walking around the village or up in the hills, getting gelato or going to the vegetable market. Michael and Diane were fantastic hosts! You can eat a yummy breakfast prepared by Michael, hang around Buti or take off for the day. Everything is very close and everything you see is beautiful. We chose to hire Michael be our tour guide for the week, which made our experience all the more spectacular. We had lovely day and half-day trips and because of Michael and Diane's familiarity of the area and knowledge of the language, our experience was not that of ordinary tourists, pouring over maps and guides and visiting all the "usual" attractions, but a much richer one where we felt truly immersed in the culture. The Sandrins are very special people and know so much about the history and nuances of the area. To be with them as guides enlivened each place we visited in a way that we never would have gotten reading the tour books and being on our own. Can't wait to go back! We give our highest recommendation for Casa Bici Buti!

Our week at Casa Bici Buti was wonderful. We found ourselves cooking and eating in several nights due to the coziness of the house and to the well-stocked kitchen. We were two couples with lots of room to spread out as well as share. Laundry facilities were more than adequate (and well used) and bathrooms were modern and clean. We had one challenge when we arrived: half the house had no heat or hot water due to a power outage the day before our arrival. Owners were very responsive and repairs were almost immediate! We loved walking to the piazza, shopping at the grocery and thoroughly enjoyed the wine and cheese shops. The local 'Butians' were helpfu and very patient with our limited Italian. Pacci is a fabulous place for dinner (we ate there twice). Alberto greeted us around town more than once. Note: if you go to Pacci, notice the profile on his sign/logo outside and then smile at Alberto. There's a striking resemblance! We highly recommend Casa Bici Buti.

We LOVED this house and the town of Buti. We traveled to Italy with our 15-year old son so only used the upper floors of the house; there were two more bedrooms downstairs that we didn't use.

The house looks out over a hill of olive trees, with an outside patio and a footbridge to go climb the hill if you want. The weather was fabulous, so we slept with the windows open and woke to the sounds of a nearby rooster and sunshine spilling into our window down the Tuscan hillside. The house is charming and very comfortable, and the kitchen makes you want to hit the grocery store and try your hand at Tuscan cooking. (Which we did). The owners provided a good book with a map of where to find things, and we took their advice one evening for dinner and enjoyed a fabulous meal at La Grotta (highly recommended). There is a walking shortcut down to the main piazza and you can be there in 5 minutes.

Make sure you don't get a very big rental car, as the streets are very narrow - you may need to park in a lot above the town as there isn't much room in the street. But that all adds to the charm of the town. Get good directions to the house before you get to Buti so you don't have to turn around!

Staying here gave us easy access to Pisa - you can either get there by main (straight) roads or a curvy mountain road.

Casa Bici Buti is a truely wonderful and relaxing space. It is finished to a very high standard, but remains homely and unpretentious. I can't speak highly enough of Michael and Diane, they were so accommodating and down to earth. One week was simply not long enough!! Buti is a lovely quaint village for those who like a slower pace. The local restaurants were fantastic. For the adventurous there is plenty to do and see in surrounding areas. I cannot wait to return to Tuscany and Casa Bici Buti!

We stayed several nights in Casa Bici Buti with the hosts, who only arrived the day before us. They must have been jet lagged but you couldn't tell: Michael and Diane went to great lengths to make our stay wonderful. When the bus failed to come, Michael picked us up from the train station and told us lots about the area as he drove us to Buti. They took us on walks around the (not a bit touristy) village, introducing us to many of the folks who where constantly coming up to greet them, making dinner reservations for us (and joining us at once) and showing us some of the lovelier details of architecture, geography and history. Our children were encouraged to explore the property, so the four of them spent hours running over the ancient stone bride and going up and down the ridiculously beautiful hill terraced with wine grapes and olive trees. (The patio facing that hill is perfect for eating/reading/napping.) Diane even helped me get a load of laundry washed and hung, which was a real mercy. All the bedrooms were comfortable and beautiful, but the kids spent lots of time in the kitchen/dining room just hanging out with our hosts, who were at all times warm and welcoming. Michael and Diane made us some excellent breakfasts, and told us the best places to get food for a hike/picnic. They also directed us to two of the local restaurants, both of which were wonderful, and to the nicest gelateria (we think) in Italy. :)

So glad we found this place, and these folks. We hope to return!

Right from our arrival Michael and Diane made us feel right at home, it was so good while traveling to finally kick back and have a cup of tea and feel we had arrived. We were traveling with Jannie my 80 something year old mother in law so our travel planning included some rest time before a boisterous family wedding in Florence. We found Buti on google earth and hoped it would be our little slice of real Italy and a welcome retreat from the weary tourist track. It was more than we hoped for.

Diane and Michael are the heart of Casa Bici and we loved the casual friendly style of B&B they ran, I will never forget how the delicious smell of Michael's cooking and Diane's breakfast drew us eventually downstairs out of our comfortable beds.

Michael and Diane have a great pride in the house they have lovingly restored, full of fascinating distractions especially Michael's wood work.

Diane and Michael were a wonderful bridge to the locals who were obviously fond of them and amused by their guest. Yes tourists are still a curiosity here! We were often greeting by 'Americano?' or 'Michaelle?' An affirmative answer resulted in warm and patient service. Our Italian was practically non existent.

The restaurants in Buti were delightful to explore, each as individual as the exuberant owners who proudly ran them. Michael booked for us and saved us the usual mistake of arriving hours too early. The hour before the meal was spent pleasantly drinking aperitifs and grazing on delicious treats with our hosts.

There is a lot more I could say about the helpfulness of Michael and Diane but it would take to long to tell but we particularly appreciated the extra genuine care they gave to Jannie who was a bit worn out from flying half way round the World and who blossomed at Buti.

Thank you Michael and Diane you made our trip to Italy very special

I selected this B&B on the basis of its setting in a small village that was close to both the sea and still central to Tuscany. The owners who I now think of as friends were instantly cooperative and amiable to my and my partners needs. They were knowledgeable on the location and on what we may want to do. The process of payment was clear as was the ability to get the money from the other side of the world and secure our stay. Michael and Dianne were key to my stay and they have helped at every turn to make this a memorable experience.

As a village; it had typically wonderful narrow streets with nooks and crannies at every turn. Casa bici buti is located just on the edge of the old castle in the oldest area of the town so dont bring a big car! Its tight and and close, like its people or a warm hug. There is walking and limited parking but what else would you expect from a village? In all the most you have to walk is 200m through a wonderfully interesting castle. All of this is located about 30-40 minutes from Pisa and its international airport with Florence and the middle of Tuscany a small drive away.

This location is the quintessential unspoilt WORKING Tuscan village. If your looking for a place to experience real Italian village life, this is it! My Italian is limited but the whole of the village and surrounding area knows the owners and go out of their way to help. Get a phrase book and try to say some things, people smile and you muddle your way through.

The rooms are spacious and there is adequate room to place your baggage with the house being built over 3 levels on the side of a slope. Its an old working mill so it has unusual spaces but is brilliant in design utilising the slope and sun to create wonderful spaces at different times of the day. The beds are comfortable and there is a range of pillows. The owners were in Italy while we were there making it a true B&B, they catered for all we could want from Italian tutelage to booking dinner ("they dont speak much Italian so just take care of them" was the call, thanks so much Guys we couldnt have done it without you). When they are away its a home stay and you would need to cater for your self from catering (we got a good home cooked breakfast every day - brilliant!) or seeing the 6 brilliant resteraunts in Buti. This would be easy as the whole area knows and would help still.

The facilities include a kitchen with brilliant stove as well as a downstairs kitchen if you would prefer to sort your selves out. There is a wide range of sitting areas from outside to inside, upstairs to down. A wide range of spots to sit from a comfy sofa downstairs in front of the TV to the most comfortable of chairs upstairs. It was hot while we were there but the solid walls kept it cool. There is hot water heating in all rooms and bathrooms with combustion stoves in the 2 living rooms. It would become so toasty when it warms up.

The location meant we could experience the food cooked in traditional styles from both sea and inland regions and we wernt let down with this!

I could not more highly recommend this as a location to visit or a place to stay. If your looking for a 5 star resort to cater to your whims, a small Tuscan village called Buti and a B&B is not for you. If you want to experience life in Tuscany and the area, this is a great place to start.

Thanks guys - you couldnt do more!
