“Better than its four-star classification”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2014

We have just returned from the San Luca Palace in Lucca, and cannot praise it enough. If it were bigger and had large-scale facilities such as a swimming pool it would no doubt be graded as five-star - but then it would lose its character as a welcoming, family-run hotel. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The reception staff took a great deal of trouble to arrange transport for us to and from the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago. The decor is traditional without being old-fashioned, and our spacious room, like the public areas, was spotlessly clean. The buffet breakfast is excellent. Its location is very convenient, just inside the walls of the old town (and it is less than a five-minute walk from the bus station, very welcome if you are arriving from Pisa airport by bus). The air-conditioned room was overlooking the pedestrian-zone street but totally sound-proof. We would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Lucca, for its high standards of service, its cleanliness and its friendliness.

Stayed here for two nights on a whim. I was immediately wowed by the room - it was huge and beautifully appointed. The bathroom was the same - I particularly like the shower design with the built in seat.

The bed was massive and extremely comfortable. My only complaint was the air conditioning which I couldn't seem to regulate properly (it wouldn't change temperature!)

The staff were extremely helpful and friendly. The breakfast was impressive with a wide selection (bubbly with breakfast, anyone?).

I would definitely stay here again - handy location (10 euro taxi fare from train station / 15 min walk), well appointed and great staff.

We stayed here for two nights at the end of May. We had a large, very comfortable room with beautiful furnishings and that rarity in European hotels, good lighting (including light for reading). The breakfast buffet is ample and everything was very fresh. Everyone on the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. A walk around (on top of) the wall was recommended to us, and was a highlight of our trip. There is a small bar with both streetside (pedestrian street) and indoor seating.

After we returned home, the hotel emailed to inform us that there had been a mistake in our final bill and we were owed a refund. It took awhile for this to be processed, due to complications with a wire transfer, but we were grateful that the hotel management dealt with us so honestly.

This was one of the best hotel experiences I've had. We will certainly return.

We recently stayed at this hotel and can't say enough about the wonderful staff. We were originally going to stay at a nearby hotel that was rated 5 stars and were so disappointed when we walked into it that we left and were able to get the only available room left at San Luca Palace Hotel at the last minute. What a great experience! Everyone from the hotel manager to the wait staff was incredibly friendly, helpful and attentive. Our hotel room was huge, quiet and comfortable. The management booked us into two different restaurants, one for each night of our stay and they were both an excellent dining experience. This hotel is located inside the walls of Lucca and that is where you definitely want to be as everything you want to see and do is within walking distance. We highly recommend this first class "boutique hotel" to anyone visiting Lucca or the Tuscany countryside. Next time we will stay longer!

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of a trip to Tuscany. Everything was wonderful. The staff were very helpful and were happy to book us a table at a local restaurant. The room was large and comfortable. Lucca is a lovely town and the fact that the hotel is right in the centre made it very easy to use as a base. Breakfast was amazing - one of the best - including delicious torte della nonna that you have to taste!
It is also worth knowing that the hotel has bikes you can borrow so you don't have to pay to hire one - we rode round the walls late at night which was a magical experience.
Can't wait to come back!

Room Tip: We had room 11, it overlooks the street but there are no cars allowed and the sound proofing is exce...

We stopped for 2 nights at the end of June. The hotel is in great location inside the city walls, and we left the car in the hotel’s own car park. The hotel itself has welcoming and helpful staff who were great to us when we arrived very late after a delayed flight and with one bag still at Heathrow. We managed to get a late meal just down the road and then when we overslept breakfast they set up a table for two just for us, on the pavement, which was perfect.
The room wasn’t the biggest (we went for a standard double) but what you really get here is the chance to walk or bike around Lucca and really get to see the town.

We only had one night at this hotel, but it was a wonderful stay. We arrived early, after a flight from the east coast, and were thrilled when the staff told us our room would be ready in a few minutes, and would we like complimentary breakfast while we waited? It was a perfect welcome to a family of five tired and hungry travelers. The room was large and well-appointed - had an old-world palace type of feel. The location was perfect - quiet but right in the center. The staff took our car and parked it for us, bringing it back promptly when needed. Breakfast was very good, the staff members were all helpful and kind, and we had a really great stay. We will return the next time we visit Lucca!
