“Authentic B & B”
Reviewed April 23, 2013

After checking out this b & b and reading the reviews I was slightly concerned however, I do wonder what some people expect.

Firstly this is a b & b and doesnt excatly what it says, it isnt a hotel, no 24 hour reception, late night drinking bar etc and for the location, rooms and breakfast it was superb.

It is a 5 minute walk to the walled city and 10 minute walk into the main town. Have to say location is wonderful and right at end of road is a fab take away pizza shop, lovely authentic bar and small restaurant.

Francesa whom works at the reception and breakfast was wonderful and nothing was too much trouble from issuing us a map to booking a taxi for us.

We found the outside and inside stunning, so nice to stay in something authentic rather than a plush hotel with no charactor. The courtyard out the back was great, even managed a pizza takeaway to eat out there.

Rooms were spotless and I mean spotless, the bathrooms were to die for and the beds were the most comfortable that I have ever slept on. Such lovely character to enjoy within the building it was wonderful.

We had the room at the front with the small balcony, such a joy to wake up and see the church from our room.

Breakfast was typically b&b style, juices, water and hot drinks, cakes, bread, eggs, meats cheeses etc. Really nothing wrong with it, bear in mind it isnt a michelin starr restaurant so not sure what people expect.

The bar next door seems alway open and we enjoyed a few one for the roads there before bedtime! Great atmosphere.

Lucca itself is glorious and wish we had longer to wander around but we did Pisa on the train which for 4 euros was a bargain for the day and only downside of our stay was that it wasnt longer.

Will return.

We spent three wonderful nights at the Corte di Re Artu' , an authentic and exclusive medieval residence. It was like visiting the past - we slept in a suite with a four-poster bed - I felt just like a queen! I can recommend the hotel for a romantic stay and for sightseeing tours of the city centre. The spacious car park next to the hotel is free of charge, so we just left the car there and walked into the historic city centre (just 5 minutes walk from the hotel). The staff were very kind and helpful, the hotel is extremely clean with a medieval ambiance, but at the same time a very contemporary feel with all the comforts one needs to feel welcome and at home.

Corte di Re Artu is one of a group of 3 hotels all created with themed rooms as a selling point. The rooms are quite impressive (paint wise) in a quirky way and you can tell that whoever did the paintings was quite talented. The hotel is located about 10 minutes walk from Lucca itself and enjoys the ability to use the pool located at one of its sister hotels.
Sadly this is were the positive aspects of the hotel ends. The hotel is not manned 24hours a day. We arrived after 4pm rang the buzzer expecting to met with a hearty welcome only to be met with a stoney silence and the buzz of a remote opening control system. On entering the hotel we were surprised at size of the place or should I say lack of it. We collected our envelope from the rear desk and showed ourselves to our room. The room was clean throughout however size wise it was less than we had expected. The room was equipped with a plastic fridge hidden away in the wardrobe. Unfortunately this did not work so we were reliant on buying cold drinks on an opportunity basis from a shop around the corner. Plastic cups provided to drink your juice from at breakfast set the bench mark for the rest of the morning meal. As you would expect from a continental breakfast your main savouries gravitate around ham and cheese. This was all processed and frankly reflected the effort that seemed to have been put into the rest of the meal which was not much. All of the food seemed to be arranged around longevity. Croissants in plastic rappers was the final straw. It seems that a little bit of effort was too much effort for this hotel. If all you want is somewhere to put your head down at night then this hotel will suffice. If you are looking for something more than that then I would not bother.

We stayed here for two nights while vacationing in Italy. The building and especially our room was intriguing. We felt as if we had stepped back into mid-evil times with the beautiful rooms and grounds. It is a straight walk of only a few short blocks to the walls of the city of Lucca. The breakfast area and the breakfast itself was great, especially the cappuccinos. It was one of the few places that we stayed in where we had more than just a sweet roll. There was plenty to choose from including boiled eggs and meat. Also, there is plenty of free parking right at the front door. We loved our room, the iron bed, paintings on the wall, antique furniture. Also, the air condition worked much better than most of the places we stayed at while in Italy. It was very comfortable, clean, and we felt safe. We thought it was just plain romantic!!! There is a little restaurant about a block away on the left as you head to the wall city. The food there was very good and the staff very accommodating. I think that Corte di re Artu has two locations in Lucca. This location does not have a swimming pool.

A wonderful "resort" atmosphere close to the walled city of Lucca. Beautiful grounds and swimming pool. In October, the tented breakfast area was just a little chilly (had to go back to the room to get a jacket).
Room was excellent....large bed (ok, the mattress was a little soft and the springs very noisy). Nice sitting area and LOTS of hot water for the shower.
Great value in the off season!

My fiancee and I stayed overnight in Lucca while traveling through Italy. After reading numerous reviews on Corte di Re Artu, we decided to chance it. Unfortunately, we were disappointed.

The room itself was beautifully appointed, and great thought and care clearly went into the design and decor. That said, the bath (one of the focal points of the room for which we were charged extra) was dirty, and a few minutes were devoted to dragging large clumps of prior guests' hair from the drain.

Upon arrival, we found that the individual who opened the door for us spoke no English. While we are not arrogant enough to suggest that all Europeans should speak English, we'd have thought it sensible in the hospitality industry to at least have a grasp of the language. In any event, it made for challenging times at both check-in and check-out.

A word of warning to those who are 'traveling through' Lucca with more than a light bag - the stairwells are extremely narrow. You'll need considerable muscle to haul anything resembling a full-size suitcase up to your room, particularly as there are no staff to lend a hand.

A final thought - while it is the owners' prerogative to be continually invisible to their guests, we wonder how difficult it would have been to resolve a serious problem, had one arisen. No comfort is afforded in this regard.

The house is authentically old but extensiviely renovated with modern conveniences.
The renovation preserved the exposed masonry in our spacious and extraordinarily
charming third-floor suite. Corte di Re Artu is only 3 blocks from the city center through
Porto San Jacopo, so you can walk to the very heart of Lucca in 5 minutes. Our host, Brunella was very sweet, friendly and made great capuccinos. We had
a wonderful time.
