I wish I could give this review six stars! Although designated as a three-star hotel, the Rex was much much better than the four-star place we stayed at in Florence, it was much cheaper, and, perhaps most importantly, it was much friendlier from the moment we walked through the door. Getting a friendly welcome makes such a difference. We had a lovely two-night stay there.
We chose the hotel partly because of the location, just a few metres from the station (we were travelling around by train), but also just across the road from the town walls and less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Cathedral, where we were attending a concert. Sometimes hotels near stations can be a bit run-down, but the Rex is a well-maintained handsome building, and the surroundings are pleasant. It is a family-run hotel.
Everything here is done to make guests feel at home. We were able to check in early, and our room (40) was clean and comfortable. The lighting was excellent in both the room and the bathroom. We had a kettle and tea-making facilities, and on the landing outside there were also teapots, biscuits, extra milk, and so on. In the bathroom there was a generous range of toiletries. There was a proper shower mat to prevent slipping, and even a bathroom stool. In the wardrobe there was a box of children’s toys. Some guests might not like the very thin towels, and the rather hard pillows, but we had no problems with them. Information (e.g. about how to operate the TV) was very clear. There were interesting Puccini and old Lucca prints on the walls. I could go on and on but it would be a shame to remove the element of surprise!
Breakfast offered plenty of variety (but no hot dishes) in a colourful and pleasant child-friendly setting. Again, you are made to feel like a guest, not a customer: nobody stands guarding the door asking for your room number as you go for breakfast. Everywhere they seem to know who you are: the gentleman on evening duty addressed us by name immediately when we came back from a walk - even though we hadn’t seen him before! He also recommended an excellent nearby restaurant (Francesco’s) to us. Like all the other staff, most of whom I guess are family members, he was friendly and helpful.
I really hope we will get the chance to stay at the Rex Hotel again!
