Review of Hotel Rex
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 7, 2017
Hotel has a great location to the train station and 200 yards to a south opening to the walled city. Staff at the desk, bar, breakfast, and chamber maid service were all friendly and accommodating. English is spoken as needed in all areas of the hotel. Excellent European style breakfast each morning. Gelato store next door for that after dinner snack. After a few hours of walking, the narrow streets become more recognizable. The Puccini operas each night are most enjoyable. (I attended 3 performances). Towers, churches, great restaurants, and good food.

My husband and I were treated so kindly by everyone at Hotel Rex . Truly A+ customer service and attention to detail .
Our room was immaculate and very peaceful and comfortable. We looked forward to a relaxed and well catered breakfast every morning .
Just a stroll away from the city walls and just across from the train station .
We would like to return to this lovely hotel

Room tip: Just request what sort of room you prefer and the hotel will sort it for you -

This is a good hotel, located close to the station and within easy walking distance of the town. There were 4 of us, all adults and had 2 rooms. The staff are all very helpful. There was a good range on offer for breakfast. We used it as a base not only to see Lucca but visited Pisa, Florence and the seaside. We got directed to a nice local restaurant on our first night and there is a good gelato shop next door

What wonderful hotel! A short walk away from the wall and the old town...approx 200 metres. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. We stayed 5 nights. Huge breakfast, beautiful clean rooms. Couldn't have asked for more Henriette.

Room tip: Ask for rooms on the other side of the railway station and it will be nice and quiet.

The staff are really friendly so feel a little bad for leaving a negative review but the hotel is so outdated it really needs some modernising. The hotel is classed as 3 star but having stayed at lots of 3 star hotels in the past, the facilities are more like a 2 star hotel at best.

On the positive:
- Really good location for exploring Lucca
-Parking free and just outside the hotel
-Friendly staff

Not so positive:
-Rooms and hotel very outdated and in need of deep clean
-Not provided with proper towels
-Shower that filled up with water due to blocked drains
-Cold water stopped in room when you turn a tap in the shower so can't flush toilet!
-Air Con very old and rattled like could stop working any minute
-Breakfast area very drap and so off putting to eat food

Overall not saying avoid but lower expectations about quality of the accommodation.

I wish I could give this review six stars! Although designated as a three-star hotel, the Rex was much much better than the four-star place we stayed at in Florence, it was much cheaper, and, perhaps most importantly, it was much friendlier from the moment we walked through the door. Getting a friendly welcome makes such a difference. We had a lovely two-night stay there.
We chose the hotel partly because of the location, just a few metres from the station (we were travelling around by train), but also just across the road from the town walls and less than 10 minutes’ walk from the Cathedral, where we were attending a concert. Sometimes hotels near stations can be a bit run-down, but the Rex is a well-maintained handsome building, and the surroundings are pleasant. It is a family-run hotel.
Everything here is done to make guests feel at home. We were able to check in early, and our room (40) was clean and comfortable. The lighting was excellent in both the room and the bathroom. We had a kettle and tea-making facilities, and on the landing outside there were also teapots, biscuits, extra milk, and so on. In the bathroom there was a generous range of toiletries. There was a proper shower mat to prevent slipping, and even a bathroom stool. In the wardrobe there was a box of children’s toys. Some guests might not like the very thin towels, and the rather hard pillows, but we had no problems with them. Information (e.g. about how to operate the TV) was very clear. There were interesting Puccini and old Lucca prints on the walls. I could go on and on but it would be a shame to remove the element of surprise!
Breakfast offered plenty of variety (but no hot dishes) in a colourful and pleasant child-friendly setting. Again, you are made to feel like a guest, not a customer: nobody stands guarding the door asking for your room number as you go for breakfast. Everywhere they seem to know who you are: the gentleman on evening duty addressed us by name immediately when we came back from a walk - even though we hadn’t seen him before! He also recommended an excellent nearby restaurant (Francesco’s) to us. Like all the other staff, most of whom I guess are family members, he was friendly and helpful.
I really hope we will get the chance to stay at the Rex Hotel again!
