We returned last week to Lucca last week for five days and nothing has changed our opinions about La Romea and the Ivory room as previously reviewed a few years ago. For us, La Romea feels as if it is a home from home. There is no higher compliment to be made.

stayed here for one night only a few years ago (Sept 2009, not Aug 2011 but that was the earliest date I could choose) on our honeymoon with our two 1.5 year old boys and, of all the lovely places we stayed at and visited in Tuscany this truly stuck out as the most memorable. Charming rooms, great breakfast, fantastic hospitality. Relaxed, helpful, friendly, efficient, beautiful, stylish, tasty & romantic too.

We recently spent three nights at La Romea with our family of five and we could not have been happier. The rooms far exceeded our expectations in terms of charm and comfort. The B&B itself is located inside a 14th century building and is just steps away from one of Lucca's main attractions, Torre Guinigi. My husband, 3-year old daughter and I spent one night in the red room and two nights in the blue room (the blue room was not available the first night of our stay). We found both rooms beautifully furnished and large. Our hosts Gaia and Giulio were extremely welcoming and helpful and gave excellent recommendations for restaurants (Locanda Sant' Andrea, immediately next to the B&B and Cantine Bernadini, a short walk away -- although my favorite restaurant in Lucca was Ristorante Canuleia).
We also got to experience the green and yellow rooms, in which our 13-year old daughter and my father-in-law stayed. Each room was lovingly and individually decorated. It was obvious that the creation of the Bed & Breakfast was a labor of love. It was particularly wonderful to start our days off with the bountiful breakfast at La Romea which included eggs cooked to order by Gaia's mother and hot steamed milk for our coffee. We enjoyed the personal experience of staying at a Bed & Breakfast which included meeting the family dog, Giotto, watching Giulio take his son to summer school on his scooter, and hearing about the breaking of the piggy bank to find 65 EUR. Giulio and Gaia were thoughtfully accomodating of our differing schedules. When our 13-year old daughter slept past the 8:30-10:30 AM breakfast window, without being asked, Gaia left out a place setting for her with a full sampling of all the offerings from breakfast offerings. We could not imagine a better place to pick for your stay in Lucca.

The air conditioner in the "green" room probably has not been serviced for ages - it was very noisy and I had to shut it down for the night. Also the window is facing a street with a noisy restaurant. Shower compartment was below average.

Room Tip: Check the noise from the aircon

My wife and I ended a two-week vacation in Italy with two nights at La Romea, and what a pleasant way to go out. Giulio and Gaia are wonderful hosts, friendly and congenial, and their B&B is comfortable and welcoming. Our large room was well-furnished, bright and cheerful - Camera Gialla, the yellow room (each room has a color theme). We slept well and woke refreshed, to a delicious breakfast including local meats, cheeses and breads. And great Italian coffee. Gaia offered eggs as well, but I was too full to partake. The B&B is in a medieval building, off the street level, quiet and sunny with lots of windows. Very open.

All the rooms adjoin a common room, which serves as the breakfast room, but also as a pleasant living room with maps, guidebooks and art books for reference and browsing. Our hosts were generous with good advice on things to do and good restaurants to eat at. We followed their recommendations and did not go wrong.

The inn is tucked away on a side street and was a little hard to find. We walked in from the train station; cars can't negotiate essentially pedestrian Lucca. Our directions were good, but medieval alleys can be confusing with the best directions. We found our way there, and once thre we found our way around Lucca and back with no problems at all. Pay careful attention to their directions on how to get there, and you'll be fine.

Showers have a smooth river rock floor. My tender feet wished I had some shower slippers. That's about the only thing I can think of that's negative in the least.

If we go back to Italy - and we both hope we do - Lucca, and La Romea, will very much be on our list.

Six of us stayed 7 nights at this excellent B&B. Four of us had stayed there previously some years ago(on that occasion we stayed 10 nights).Giulio & Gaia (and of course Gaia's mother) are first class hosts--nothing is too much trouble. The B&B is in an old building ( all buildings in the vicinity are old!) so initial impressions can be a little offputting. However climb the stairs to the first floor and you are in for a pleasant surprise. Only the extremely fussy will not enjoy the breakfast and ,amongst other things, you can have eggs any way you want.

Room Tip: Only 5 rooms .All are different. The yellow room is a little dark in the afternoon but a delight in y...

We stayed in this B&B some 9 years ago & enjoyed our stay so much that we decided to return this year. The jovial hosts Giulio & Gaia were as usual most helpful, friendly & nothing was too much trouble.
The B&B is on the first floor of an old historic building but the rooms have been modernised without loosing their old world charm.
The breakfast is a rewarding continental breakfast which will keep you going until tea time.
La Romea and its hosts are a joy to behold.
