Villa la Principessa was an absolutely delightful place to stay in Lucca. It is set in lovely gardens, which are beautifully maintained and perfect for a little stroll after breakfast. The building has kept its sense of historical grandeur while tastefully adding some very interesting pieces of modern art. Dinners and breakfasts at the hotel were beautifully prepared, and the service was friendly and attentive. The drive into the historic part of Lucca is only about 5 minutes--though I wouldn't say the busy roads into town were walkable.

Room Tip: Ask for a front balcony room

Nobleman's estate. Beautiful grounds and building. Charming feel. Room was clean, quiet and large. Breakfast was the best anywhere.
Negatives: Outside of town so you need a car to see old-Lucca. Restaurant for supper was only ok for food quality and somewhat pricey. No free internet access.

stayed at villa using recommendation of highly regarded travel magazine....enormous disappointment....dirty, frayed carpeting, worn furniture, frightening artwork on display (!) in common areas....bedrooms smelled moldy and had damp feeling...thinnest pillows ever seen and sketchy bed covers...furniture looked like collection from garage sale....thin towels, plastic cups and minimal bathroom provisions...had dinner there one night - mediocre service, mediocre food...place needs major overhaul...
on positive side, staff were nice and tried their best to accomodate...10 minutes from lucca...close to autostrada

Dear Camfield,
probably the villa not have characteristics that you look for in a hotel. We think that you have confused the classicism of the villa and careful restoration as something worn. Fortunately, many guests have a different perception. Thank you anyway for your comment.
Best Regards.

If you've ever seen the film The Leopard it's like you step back into that slightly frayed opulence of another era. The central reception areas are simply magnificent, the grounds extensive, the pool delightful. We had a room with a large balcony and a 16ft high ceiling so space and light were everywhere. The staff were wonderful, so helpful and friendly. The restaurant team try hard and the food is imaginative and delicious, with extensive use of local ingredients. A car is not essential; altho you cannot walk into Lucca, it is a short taxi ride to Lucca rail station and thence to Pisa. Overall it was a wonderfully peaceful place to stay, altho when we were there, there were few other guests and I don't know what it would be like in the high season with more guests than poolside sun loungers (but then that situation would apply to most places).
