“To be avoided”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2013 via mobile

We stayed here on New Year's Eve because of a misunderstanding about our booking at a nearby boutique hotel. We paid €149 + tax for an adequate room at the back. €40 less would have seemed more reasonable, especially in view of the extraordinarily poor breakfast in the dirty, crowded breakfast room and the smell of cigarette smoke that permeated the building. The location alone will keep this place going, but if you can avoid it, Lucca's many charms can be appreciated better from another vantage point.

I stayed here in September 2013 while in the city on business. My room was ready as expected upon check-in, and it was much larger than I expected for a European hotel (though probably on the small side for Americans). The room (a "Comfort Double") was clean and it included a small refrigerator. The hotel staff were not the most pleasant, but I think they were friendlier to Italian-speaking tourists. The water pressure in the shower was iffy, but clearly related to whether or not the person in the next room was also showering. I had a great Wi-Fi connection in my room (room number 10), but colleagues who also stayed there reported having very poor Wi-Fi. A downside to room 10 was that it faced the plaza and it was quite loud right outside my window until 11 PM or later. I thought the hotel breakfast was really excellent. They offered a buffet of cold meats and cheeses, hard-boiled eggs, rolls, pastries, and yogurt with granola. The yogurt was fantastic, as were the rolls. The coffee was terrible, so you're better off getting that at a local cafe instead. Overall, my stay here was really pleasant and reasonably priced, especially if you take advantage of the free breakfast. I'd stay here again and recommend it to others.

Room Tip: Room 10 has a great Wi-Fi connection, but it faces a noisy plaza.

The location of the hotel couldn't be better and there was lots going on in the square outside including a market and ice rink. However our room overlooked the square and it was extremely noisy until about midnight with music pounding out from the ice rink. Luckily I had ear plugs, my partner however had a terrible nights sleep. The worst thing about the room was the horrific smell of sewerage coming from the bathroom. We had to leave our window open in December just to not gag! The breakfast was bad and the watered down juice disgusting however the staff were very friendly to us.

Location was wonderful:) I thought the room had a weird scent and the shower was terrible..I agree that the staff was not pleasant. They were just so so and the breakfast was terrible. The milk was so warm, I had to throw away my food..

If you travel to Italy this town in a must visit. The hotel is average and a great base to enjoy the wonderful city it is located in. The staff could have been more friendly but don't let that discourage your stay. I mean how much interaction do you have with them, and believe me the friendly locals will more than make up for the staffs deficiencies.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that faces either East or North which faces a Piazza. Also ask for an upper room if...

As a regular traveller, I don't normally give negative reviews, instead accepting that levels of service vary between different countries and continents. I have to make an exception however for Hotel Universo. This was, without doubt, the worst hotel I have ever stayed in, and I have persevered with some poor ones over the years. Staff attitude was appalling; the worst I've ever encountered travelling anywhere in the world. Reception staff never smiled; didn't acknowledge guests passing the reception area; looked as if they hated being there; on paying the bill having stayed there for 5 days the receptionist didn't enquire about our stay, in fact didn't even say good-bye, just grunted and returned her gaze to her computer screen. Yes, thank you very much for your business! Appalling!!
We had booked a superior double room however, on arrival, were allocated room 69, a small (hideously florally decorated) room with a view of roofs. I challenged this and was, after long argument, moved to a bigger room, room 6, in which the 2 single beds pushed together were desperately uncomfortable, one very hard, the other lop-sided and with springs protruding. In the bathroom, the bath was tiny and there was no shower curtain so the room was flooded every time I showered. Breakfast was dreadful - machine coffee, diluted fruit juice, bread rolls, cold hard- boiled eggs, and occasionally croissants. When I asked the breakfast room attendant if there were any croissants left, she shrugged her shoulders and said, "No, there's bread" and walked away. I also noted that a number of other guests entered the breakfast room, looked at the scant offering and left. We ate breakfast out for the remainder of the holiday. Unfortunately, the staff at the Hotel Universo took the gloss off what should have been a fantastic holiday in a wonderful location.

Lucca is a wonderful place to see and the Hotel Universo is in a central location within the walled city to use as a base. It is a charming place - an old palazzo converted to an inn - so do not expect things to be up to date. Rooms were spacious and kept very clean. Bathroom was of a decent size but surprisingly there was little space to place any toiletries or other sundries. The shower was a tight fit for all but the most diminutive of individuals. However, the lavender-scented towels were a very pleasant touch. Probably the most annoying feature was the noise level - both from adjacent rooms as well as the street. Take ear plugs if you are sensitive! Given all this it is still worthwhile to consider staying here as the location is very good ( but have a map or a guide as it is easy to get "lost"! ).

Room Tip: Try to get a room not facing any traffic.
