“It’s a must”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2014

The walls are one of the sights to see. Best tackled on a hired bike! We walked but it’s a long way round.

“Rent a bike”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

If you are only visiting Lucca for half a day, as I did, I highly recommend renting a bike to get around. I tried walking the entirety of the wall and was unable to complete it in time. The wall, once you are on it, offers great views of the city. Worth the effort!

“Great Perspective of the City”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2014

It is as good as touted by other reviewers. We did the entire circuit via bicycle on two separate days and a partial stroll one evening. The views are indeed wonderful. It gives an entirely different perspective of the city. Two attractions that we visited from inside the walls looked completely different from on top of the wall. In fact, seeing the garden at Palazzo Pfanner from the wall convinced us that we wanted to actually visit that attraction. We had visited the Basilica di San Frediano prior to our journey along the wall, so it was interesting to see it from this alternate perspective. One attraction we did not find open during our time in Lucca was the Botanical Garden, however, we were able to get a little taste of it from the wall. A circuit of the wall on bicycle takes approximately 30 minutes at a casual bicycling pace. Of course, the first time around takes longer because there is a tendency to stop and view various perspectives. The volume of walkers, runners and bicyclists seemed to be less in the early morning and increased as the day progressed.

“Great way to get your bearings”

We borrowed a couple of bikes (free from Hotel Ilaria) and enjoyed going around the walls that we went around again!

Safe and easy ride so would be good for all ages.

“The only way to start your exploration of Lucca”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2014 via mobile

Orientate yourself by cycling/ walking the walls. It's the only way to start! You get a real feel for the place in just one lap, and if you start at the Santa Maria entrance there is a fabulous yogurteria to buy ice creams from. The second thing to do is climb the Torre Guinigo to orientate yourself from the centre! A perfect beginning.
