“A home away from home”

We stayed at B&B Principe Calaf for three nights during July 2013 and were very pleased with our choice of this specific B&B. We got a superior room (in the main floor - named Turandot) which was beautifully decorated and personalized with a Turandot opera theme. The room was spotless clean and very spacious and even had a small balcony facing the garden and courtyard. The room did not have aircondition, but there was a fan available and also a fridge and a TV with multiple Italian TV channels. We also had our own newly renovated bathroom which included both a shower and a jacuzzi. We could not think of a more pleasant way to relax than to hang out here when we were not strolling the streets of ancient Lucca. The owner Maria and her husband as well as their Brazilian staff member were so nice and welcoming and helped us with directions and recommendations for good restaurants, sights and tours. Also, the B&B offered us to loan bicycles which was an excellent way to explore Lucca. When my boyfriend crashed on one of the bicycles, Maria's husband - a retired doctor - even offered to fix his hurt arm. These are the nicest people we have met in Italy so far and the place really exceeded our expectations! We have stayed at multiple five star hotels worldwide but felt that we got plenty more value for our money in this lovely place. The only con - which in our opinion was outweighed by all the pro's - is that the traffic surrounding the villa can be somewhat noisy. As we are used to living in the city, it was really a non-issue for us but if you are a light sleeper, you may want to consider bringing some earplugs. We give this place our very best recommendations and will come back the next time we visit Lucca!

We booked Principe Calaf (the actual hotel), but as we were touring through Italy our itinerary has changed and we arrived to Lucca earlier then planed. Principe Calaf was full for that night, but Maria (the landlady) was extremely helpful and offered us an apartment just outside of Lucca, I was conscious at the beginning, but the apartment was in a very nice and quite location less then 10 minutes away from Principe Calaf, furnished to a good standard and everything looked very new. Also as it was with the kitchen and had a sofa bed in the living room - ended up to be a better option for us as we travel with a small child.
Maria next day offered to move back into the hotel if we want to, but we were very pleased with the apartment and stayed there all 3 nights.
Also, as Maria offered us to use a hotel parking so we didn't have any problems parking near the Lucca gates or main entrances into the city,
Hope this helps.

We stayed in this B & B late April. It's a really nice refurbished old house, large rooms,
remodeled bathrooms, comfortable beds. The owners and staff are pleasant. The
breakfast is plentiful with the only fresh strawberries we were served in 5 weeks of
travel. The house is located in a good part of town. Walking to the old town inside
the wall is just a short walk away.

But......unfortunately the building sits right on the corner of two very busy streets
with a stop light, one a main street out of town. The street noise is endless, trucks,
motorcycles roaring by, ambulance sirens both day and night. We were in two
different rooms on different sides of the building trying to get some sleep to no avail.
Closing the glass windows tightly and the wood shutters over them did not block out
the noise. I feel badly about having to tell of this problem because all inside was
anything we could ask for......just a bad location if you're a light sleeper..

On arrival we were warmly welcomed by Joana. Our room was absolutely immaculate and beautifully decorated. The breakfast was delicious and varied and they cater for special diets (gluten free). Maria's and Joana's hospitality made us feel as if we were staying with good friends.
We hope our next visit will be longer to enable us to appreciate this lovely. We strongly recommend this lovely B & B and we will try to come back in the near future.

From the moment we drove through the gate of Principle Calaf , we were met with a warm and welcoming greeting from Maria the Landlady, who could not do enough to help us throughout the stay. Maria insisted on helping us with our luggage and showed us to a beautifully decorated room on the second floor, a large, light and airy room with an equally beautiful en-suit, which was cleaned to perfection every day. We also had the use of Maria's bicycles, which are a very useful for navigating Lucca.
I would recommend this B&B to friends and family. And will use again on our next visit.
Thankyou Maria for a memorable stay.

From the moment we arrived we felt completely relaxed and welcome at Principe Calaf B&B . Maria was a warm and interesting host and introduced us to Lucca with a map and places of interest to see. We were able to ride her bicycles and had a wonderful stay in magic Lucca. The room was clean and beautifully decorated and an artistic flare was obvious throughout the house.
Her staff were wonderful too I think her name was Julianna . I would definitely recommend a stay here.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the top as they have a feeling of a loft.
