Arriving in Lucca late in the day with no reservations, we drove to the center city and made inquiries at several hotels. Prices for last minute rooms were very high, and we quickly learned that parking our car would be a hassle. Then we headed outside the walls to the Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi, with rather low expectations.
What a pleasant surprise! The staff greeted us very courteously, our room was spacious and modern (likewise the bathroom), and the large breakfast buffet was one of the nicest we'd seen in Italy. Our room had a lovely view of the mountains to the north, and we could see our car in the hotel's large, free parking lot.
Also, driving into the center city for dinner was surprisingly easy. The drive took a little more than five minutes, and we found many parking places were available in city lots late in the day. We enjoyed a relaxing dinner and returned to the Best Western Grand Hotel Guinigi with no problem.More
