“Great Location inside the city walls”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

Hotel La Luna exceeded my expectations. I had heard it was a little complicated getting inside the city walls by car.We took the train from Florence, did a day trip to Pisa and then took a taxi from the train station to the hotel. I felt like we were driving in an alleyway and interrupting people as they were walking but they just moved over and the taxi proceeded to drop us off right by the hotel. We stayed in the annex section which is above the parking area. The room was nicely furnished with a clean but small bathroom; small but adequate shower with plenty of hot water. After coming from Venice the room seemed spacious. We were satisfied in every way and had a great view of the street and entryway. The breakfasts were very nice, with an above average of breads, meat & cheese, coffee and juices. The eating area is comfortable. The hotel personnel are quite helpful and they never seemed bothered when we asked a question or needed help with something.

One of the things I liked about Hotel La Luna was the location. It was easy to get around the other parts of town that is inside the walls. This was our first time ever in the city and we were just delighted being able to trek around town, look at the shops and enjoy the variety of restaurants and cafes. We really liked walking up the Torre Guinig with the garden on top. It is a 250 step climb but well worth it as the view of the city is awesome.

Our favorite thing to do however was to ride bicycles around the city ramparts. That was a blast. You can easily rent the bikes within walking distance of the hotel. We packed a lunch and had a very nice picnic on one of the grassy areas on the ramparts. One day, to her delight my wife discovered a very large flea market right along the city walls. We had a great time mixing with the locals. Lucca is a very relaxed and fun place to visit. We stayed there two nights and that seemed sufficient to enjoy the city. Having never been to Italy before Lucca epitomizes what you would imagine a small Tuscany town to be like.

Last month (June) I once again stayed at Hotel La Luna. This hotel is a three star hotel right in the central shopping area of beautiful Lucca. It is located on the main shopping street called Via Fillungo. The hotel personnel are friendly, helpful and cheerful. This hotel is all about location, location, location with the added bonus of being very reasonably priced, clean and comfortable with a good breakfast. The padrone (owner) and his daughter are very helpful if there is anything you need, eg car hire, sightseeing etc.

There is so much to see in the beautiful winding streets inside the big wall surrounding Lucca so from this hotel its not hard to find your way around.

The hotel is two buildings that appear to be "L shaped" with two separate entrances depending on which building your room is in. I found the room to be reasonably spacious for a three star hotel with a comfortable sized bathroom. The TV was old but after an initial problem with getting the TV to work it was promptly replaced with one that did work and had a good coverage of both Italian and English speaking channels.

There are some very good restaurants within easy walking distance from La Luna and you are right next to the Piazza Anfiteatro which is a great place to sit, have a drink and watch the passing parade.

I would definitely stay at Hotel La Luna again when I return to Lucca next year (2013). I also thank them for looking after me so well where nothing was a problem.

Room Tip: All the rooms I have stayed in were very comfortable. You will not get any traffic noise as there i...

This hotel is a wonderful find within the city walls of Lucca. It is perfectly located on Via Fillungo (a main street) with shopping, restuarants and local attractions. Upon arrival we received a warm welcome from a young man named Paulo. He showed us to our rooms and brought up our luggage thankfully because we were on the second floor and without an elevator. The rooms were large- we had a quad and a double room. The ceilings were about 20 feet tall with amazing frescos painted on them. The hotel is very clean, ample toiletries, towels and linens provided each day. Free internet and plenty of outlets to charge electronics. Breakfest consisted of fruits, cereals, pastries, juices and gluten free items. And of course Paulo made espressos and cappuccinos upon request.
The front desk staff was also very helpful. They went out of their way to help us extensively with train and bus schedules, Everyone also spoke English very well.
The train station is a 15 minute walk from the hotel since it is located outside the city walls and from there it is very easy to day trip. We visited Florence, Pisa and Via Reggio each evening returning to the peaceful city of Lucca. We also rented bikes and segways to ride within the city and on the city walls.
Lucca has a summer music festival each year beginning in the middle to the end of June. The outside venue is located about 5 mintes from the hotel. Even if you do not have a ticket for the performances you can just walk the streets and hear the music.
Overall the city of Lucca and this hotel are a unique experience and a wonderful find.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main hotel because of their unique character.

This is a nice hotel, well located inside the city, very convenient for all attractions, restaurants and night life. Our only regret is the weak airconditioning in our room, which was not able to cope with high temperature of the italian summer. The tourist book advertised "free parking" but we actually had to pay extra for parking. Not a big deal, as parking or driving within the city are almost impossible. The managers and staff were friendly and helpful. Overall, a good 3-star hotel.

Room Tip: If traveling during the summer make sure the air conditioning works and is strong enough to cool the...

The location of La Luna is perfect, right in the middle of everything so you can walk everywhere. It's fun to explore the paths on the old city walls. The hotel has a main building and an annex. I ended up staying in the annex. I was initially apprehensive about that but it turned out fine. The room was clean and comfortable. I appreciated the elevator! I didn't have a whole lot of contact with the staff but nothing came up where I needed help.

This hotel is close to everything. The staff is very helpful and the rooms are clean and well appointed. Parking is available on site for additional cost. This is a plus because you don't need a car in Lucca, everything can be reached easily by foot. There are 2 buildings, each fronting a courtyard which is right off a main street. Get good directions because we drove in circles for a bit using our Garmin. Finally stopped at a tourist office and found we were very close. We were very pleased to stay at La Luna. Try these restaurants-I Santi and Via San Giorgio. Both within walking distance.

Room Tip: The back building is more modern and quiet.

We decided to transfer to Lucca at the last minute and pulled our our trusted
Rick Steves Italy guide to find a hotel. He listed La Luna and I called to make a reservation for two rooms for the next night. Sarah answered (as Rick said she would) and was very gracious, reserving the rooms for a very discounted rate and breakfast the next day. When we arrived in Lucca the next day and saw the narrow medieval streets, we wondered if it was safe to drive in, so we walked in to visit with the Information office first. They assured us we could drive to La Luna (enter the walls, turn right then left - you will see it there!). HA! The instructions were so simple, yet so difficult. We were asking directions every 400 feet!
And the streets were so narrow and difficult to navigate! Yikes! But we made it and thank goodness, they had a garage for parking and took the keys from us at the reception desk. When we began the walk up the narrow, tight stairway to our second floor rooms we were a bit apprehensive, but once we got to our rooms - they were spacious, clean and well equipped. Thank goodness! Breakfast was standard, but certainly adequate. Sarah, Isabella and Paul were wonderful staff members (and members of the family that owns the hotel - Sarah is the owners daughter, Isabella his sister), talking with us and providing wonderful complimentary wine in the evening as we sat in their lobby and played cards. They told us stories of their Christmas celebrations (we stayed December 12), and shared about the traditions and customs of the area. Paul was so sweet the next morning as we checked out, helping to load our car and kissing us ladies on the cheeks with a flourish and a "Buon Natale!". It was just the right place to stay for the night in Lucca - so glad we found it and made the reservation!
