We were allocated this hotel at the tourist information office after we alighted from the bus from Pisa. The whole of Lucca was pretty full on a Saturday night and although the Moderno is outside the city walls, it is very close to one of the main gates into the town.
First of all this is a hotel that is brand spanking new inside and although basically a two star hotel, much thought and care has gone into the décor of the rooms and the reception area. With no doubles available, we each had similar single rooms next door to one another and both were bright and modern in light modernist style, with attractive wooden floors and pale light reflecting décor. The bathroom was a reasonable size and again with everything looking spotless and shiny new, there was not a scrap of dust or dirt anywhere to be seen. Breakfast the next morning was first rate for such a modest establishment, with fresh fruit salad and my favourite flavour yoghurt (pineapple) amongst the items on offer and the coffee was excellent. The only drawback to this hotel is the lack of a lift but my suitcase was carried upstairs to my room before I had registered the fact they didn’t have one, but as this is a low rise building this will only be a problem to the seriously disabled.
The hotel is situated in a cul de sac with a footbridge at the end of the road that crosses the railway track with Lucca train station mere yards away. To get into town you simply cross the bridge and you are on the ring road around the walled city and the gate into town is right opposite leading almost immediately to the big square that houses the opera house with ancient buildings and cafes and restaurants adjacent. By the way proximity to the railway line is not a problem as the trains don’t run at night so sleep is undisturbed. If you have a car, parking in this area is not a problem
The proprietors speak some English and will bend over backwards to help, so it is a pity that the comments here are so negative as it might put people off. Clearly the hotel has been totally refurbished to a high standard and at sixty Euros for a single room the place is a bargain, for those on a budget this hotel would be a good choice.
- Official Description (provided by the hotel):
- Moderno Hotel in Lucca looks on to a little square used as public car park, in a quiet residential zone near the train station and just few steps from the Renaissance-era city walls which enclose the promenade of the Old Town. The Hotel il placed in a pretty and antique three floors-building totally refurbished with care and in good taste, with a small open terrace where we serve our rich breakfast during summer. Moderno was one of the first hotel in Lucca to be opened, but our management, totally a family-run business, is so recent and our hospitality is genuine, vital and so modern. ... more less
