We booked this restaurant months in advance based on reviews on TA. We found it quite difficult to locate but were so glad we persevered. It turned out to be the best meal of our honeymoon, no mean feat when you consider the amazing meals we had during our 3.5week trip. The villa is delightful, set in wonderful countryside in a little village outside of Lucca. It looks deserted. We park, walk through the gardens to the back and tentatively walk inside. We figure out the restaurant must be upstairs. We enter the room and are greeted by Marco, the owner. The room is cosy. We are the only customers. Marco soon hits his stride, we are charmed and enchanted by his personality and love of food and wine. We chat about Australia - where we had lived for 25 years and he had lived for a number of years too - we chat about food, chefs, restaurants, life in general. A few more people wander in. We opt for the degustation entree - an inspired choice it turns out - mushroom bouillon - absolutely sublime!! polenta with cheese and truffle, a mousse of capsicum, polpete, cold cuts of sausage, olives, the best home made bread. I had the main course of tordelini lucchese - bloody brilliant, again inspired. My husband had the fried chicken and rabbit which was nice but a little dry. We had wild boar with grilled polenta. We shared the most amazing catalan carmel with a creamy custard in another bowl - wow!!!! Didn't want the night to end. Such a very reasonable price. Do yourselves a favour, go there.

Remains my favorite restaurant in all of Italy - whole world! The service and ambience are splendid, the location is still breath-taking and the food is still solidly in the to-die-for category.
We took a taxi from Lucca - about a 12 minute ride - and enjoyed the Sunday Afternoon Villa Bongi Experience. Leigh helped us select a killer wine and one of us chose the set Sunday menu while the the other just grazed. There was a sampler of anti-pasti (every one a masterpiece) and then a choice of perfect pasta and then a roasted pork of exquisite tenderness served with roasted potatoes. My friend tried a cheese melange that was generous and perfectly balanced and then the all-veg pasta that really sang sweet Italian love songs. My freshly-baked pear cake dessert still provides Villa Bongi dreams. Marco continues to come up with menus that are representative of the region but incredibly varied and enticing. We seemed to be the only guests who arrived in a taxi and spoke more English than Italian - it is a joy to get out of town a "little ways" and dine with Italians....truly.

Go for Sunday pranzo so that you can savor the views across the valley and the beautiful garden along with the food. The road there is challenging, but it is worth hiring an experienced local taxi driver in Lucca to take you there...it's only a short ride from central Lucca. Leigh and Marco are warm and accommodating hosts, and the food is exceptionally good at exceptionally reasonable prices. No pretense. Just good stuff.

We drove to it on Thursday April 18, 2012 around 8:00 PM. The road to the restaurant is tight and winding even by Italian standards. After arriving and seeing only one other car, we decided to leave as it would have been difficult to get out even on one glass of wine. Locals told us it was recently re-opened and although we wanted to explore and give it a try it is just too far out for a late night drive on such tight winding roads.
