“A great place to stop and stay as you are travelling through Tuscany”
Reviewed February 3, 2011

Livorno was not in our travel plans until some friends invited us to stay with them and we were incredibly surprised. This is the perfect place to make your home base as you are traveling through Tuscany. It is a family, relaxing, old world feeling type of town. A walk by the Terrazza Macagni by the sea on a sunny day is the perfect substitute for a psychologist (as my friend says) where you can see families walking with their babies greeting each other making you feel you are in another kinder, slower and more pleasant world. Livorno Centrale is a great station with easy and inexpensive train connections to most towns in Tuscany such as Pisa (15 mins), Florence (80 mins), Siena and San Gimignano (about 2 hrs). Walking downtown is another treat as you get the feeling you are stepping back in time 30 years. If you do don't miss getting the local delicacy "cinque e cinque" the most traditional sandwich from this area full of calories but full flavor as well. Don't forget to get it with eggplant! And since you are diving into a world of calories get also a "fratte" the local donut while it is still hot. . .die Kispry Kreme and Dunkin' Donuts!

“Livorno”
Reviewed September 15, 2010

Livorno was our gateway to Pisa and Florence.

We travelled in August and can only say that we were extremely hit by the heat and intense sun. What a shocker indeed.

Experience the beautiful flora and beautiful scents throughout your stay.

Our experience in traveling onto to Pisa was a memory we will never forget. You visualise country side a vast open places but instead was driven to a housing estate to which led to the grounds of Pisa and the great tower.

Livorno. Beautiful Tuscany at it's prime.

“Stepping stone for cruisers”
Reviewed July 19, 2009

We arrived at the port of Livorno, which is basically the gateway to Florence or Pisa. We were told that there is no way to walk out of the port and were obliged to take an independent shuttle bus to get through the port. This cost $14 for both ways to go the 2 miles. It is true that there are no pedestrian areas, and would be dangerous to walk through, but we feel that these costs should be assumed by the cruise line or at least disclosed.

We decided to go to Pisa by train and then to Lucca. The train system is very well organised and reasonably priced (under 10E for most destinations, and less or free for kids). We made the mistake of not checking the sign at the platform and got on the wrong train. It turned out that our train was delayed by five minutes and we got on the earlier one. Instead of going to Lucca, we ended up going all the way to Florence, paying for the fare to Florence, not using our tickets to Lucca, and charged a large fine for being on the wrong train. By the time we got to Florence we basically had 35 minutes there and had to go back in order to catch our ship!

After we figured out the train system, we took the train everywhere and had a super time. I highly recommend not going with the organised shore excursions for most of the ports.

“livorno as a port of call”
Reviewed June 10, 2009

to all you cruisers out there, I just want to tell you that when you dock in livorno italy there will be a number of car hire companies alongside and you can rent a car from 80 euro for a day and so enable your party to visit pisa and florence instead of just one as offered by your cruise line. This will save you substantial money and add to your enjoyment of these beautiful cities. If you have a sat. nav. at home bring it with you although getting about is very easy.

“Cruise stop here with Costa”
Reviewed March 2, 2009

This was our first stop with the Costa Concordia cruise in February 2008. We hadn't signed up for any tours and just wanted to walk around & get a better feel of Italy. It's cool this time of year but one could still sit at an outside table, have a coffee or beer and people watch. I was impressed that the people walking by had style. It was a nice change not to see people in dumb t-shirts & baseball hats. No great monuments or ancient ruins that we saw, just a pleasant day with the sun out to walk around the town. Just from a short visit like this, we'd like to spend more time in Italy.
