Livorno is a good city to base oneself for travel to other nearby cities, as well as a good city to explore on its own. Hotel Houston albergo is a great alternative to higher-priced hotels. While it may not have the amenities of a 5-star hotel, it's definitely top-notch in terms of budget accommodation.
The owners use hygienic sheets on its beds & pillows, ensuring good hygiene & cleanliness, in addition to regular cleaning (sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, etc.). The artistic/artsy yet simple decor makes one feel welcome, at home, comfortable upon walking in, providing an extra incentive to creative/artist types. Small meals/snacks are provided at extra (cheap) cost, and there's a hot drink machine in reception. A little store right downstairs (turn right upon walking outside) provides cheap food/snacks, and restaurants & pasticcerias abound in the area. Wi-fi is available, and there are small TVs attached to the walls in each room. Rooms don't have telephones, but with all of the exploring you'll be doing, you likely won't need one. Because the albergo is on a busy street, it can get a bit noisy during the day; closing your windows will not eliminate the noise, but it'll decrease the noise.
In sum, this accommodation can appeal to different travelers seeking a budget-friendly, clean, and simple place to rest one's head at any time of the year.
Bonus tip: avoid dining in the pizzeria next door (to the left of and attached to the hotel). Food is an art in Italy; unfortunately, the pizzeria next door hasn't mastered that art at all.
