We were staying at the hotel attached to this restaurant, but hadn't planned to eat here. However, when we found that our venue of choice was full, we came back with no reservation, and to our surprise, were seated right away. We had three courses and a good selection of breads as an apero, Service was quite good, the place was clean, not noisy at all which was good. Whilst there wasn't anything to moan about, we wouldn't come back, as there are better places, but on a Saturday night, we ought to have booked ahead.

We walked all over Livorno looking for a place that served fresh seafood. Walked to the Gran Duca , across from the ferry terminal. The setting was pleasant and the service attentive. 4 euro cover charge and two euro for still water,10 euros and counting. The bread was very good, different varieties and textures. The seam bream cappuccino with fresh vegetable was very good, with it drizzle of balsamic reduction. Now comes the not so good portion of the meal. The fried calamari , gritty no flavor heart burn waiting to happen. The fresh pasta ,though cooked perfectly, had a tomato sauce that tasted straight out of a jar. No flavor no herbs or spices. It was hot it temperature though. House wine good as expected. Not worth the price or walk for that matter.

Reasonable rooms, if you get a double on the sea front, and not a bad restaurant, but the whole place lacks atmosphere, particularly the bar (expect for the female Basil Fawlty behind the bar). Livorno is not a great place for hotels, and this is just about acceptable if you have to be here for business

We dined at Gran Duca prior to boarding a ferry for a week of rest and relaxation in Sardinia. This locale is nicely decorated; being suited for both elegant and casual dining. Upon arrival we were promptly greeted, seated and provided with menus. The waiter brought us a nice selection of artisan breads. We ate on the enclosed terrace where our table and chairs had a downward slope due to uneven flooring. Service ware (table linens, plates and utensils) were adequate.

Being in this great fishing seaport of Livorno, we certainly were ready for a seafood meal. I started with Baby Octopus stewed in a tasty red sauce, served over two slices of crusty bread. The octopuses were fresh, though the portion could have been a little more generous. The bread took up most of the serving, giving the impression you were getting more. I mopped up the remaining sauce with additional bread. I tasted my wife's Warm Seafood Antipasto, which was comprised of mussels, clams, shrimp, squid and cuttlefish. All seemed to be quite fresh.

For a pasta course, we both had one of the restaurant's specialties; Mixed Seafood Spaghetti served in a clear sauce made from the liquid rendered by the cooked seafood. The dish was tasty, though not outstanding from any other time I've had this recipe in other restaurants.

We skipped the main entrée and ordered a layered Millefiore pastry with sweet ricotta cheese and fresh berries. The presentation was pleasing; however, the pastry was actually too brittle, breaking into tiny pieces making the dessert a disaster to eat.

Service was mediocre as the waiters gave precedence to larger group of businessmen. Prices were on the high side. Our meal above, plus a bottle of water and two glasses of Pinot Bianco wine totaled 70 euro.

Gran Duca was recommended by Italian owners of our guesthouse. The fact that it was attached to a hotel, the "grand" decor put us slightly off at first but it was late and we decided to give it a go. Service was impeccable but nothing quite prepared us for the black Squid ink risotto that sent our taste buds to another planet. Probably the best risotto I've ever had in my life. My Spaghetti marinara was also quite the success and we left very, very happy.
