The Pensione is a wonderful old building with great views of Florence. However, this is the only good feature of the hotel.

The "daughter of the house" who ran the hotel was very obnoxious. Every morning we were woken early by her load voice calling out to staff.
She had her favored guests and kept others guest waiting while she had private conversations. I had to wait a good fifteen minutes while she chatted about her family to other guests before I could pay my bill on checking out.

They also 'hide expenses' on the bill by combining some dinner, room and bar service costs. It is very hard to work out the bill as some expenses are combined, while others are not.

From the breakfast room you could hear the kitchen staff fighting.

Overall, a very poorly run establishment.

We just stayed at Pensione Bencista with our 4 young children, and couldn't have hoped for a better stay. The location is wonderful, with perfect views of Florence, the Duomo resting snugly in the city center. We ate breakfast looking at the city, and dinner in a large, high-ceilinged hall, with food that we found very good, and our children loved.

If you are a snob, like the reviewers above, then coming to a pensione and expecting 5star hotel service and attendant bellboys is simply asinine. Would you people have required the kind elderly couple that helps run the place to carry your bags like little manservants for you, while you huffily walk behind them, scoffing at their every lack of deference? I'm very sad to read reviews like those that are posted above.

I would definitely suggest a stay to any family that wants to go to Florence, wants a great view, great rooms and a nice, easy atmosphere. You are a short drive to Florence, and parking is not all that bad in the city center.

My only two problems were the mosquitoes (like all of Italy, air conditioning is a rarity, so open windows are the standard), but we closed the windows and used the very appropriate fans cool us at night, which was great. Also, the bus stop is very inconvenient and you have to stand on a very busy road while waiting for the bus, which is difficult and scary with children. I suggest you drive to town - we did, and found parking very quickly and easily.

Overall, great place, friendly people, wonderful view, great food.

I just returned from a trip to Italy & was fortunate enough to end it with a 2 night stay at Bencista.
Go & enjoy sitting on the terrace ,enjoying a bottle of wine & taking in the stunning views of Florence.
The staff couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Dinner in the huge dining room is perfectly simple and lovely.
Beatrice and her family are wonderful. What they do here they do very very well.
Next time I'll know to skip the heat & crowds of Florence & spend my day reading & relaxing at Bencista.

Stayed here for 4 nights in October 2008. This property overlooks Florence in the hills. Some rooms have excellent views to Florence . First night Rm 17 - bath with hand shower. Moved night 2 to Rm 22 with excellent full bath room with separate shower. Beds comfortable and good size. This is not a modern establishment so walls were thin, noise echoed in corridors, no TV and no papers.
A good retreat. Patio downstairs excellent, Continental Italian style breakfast - no hot food.
Dinners can be arranged E13 for homely food. Reception helpful. Uphill walk tor bus to Florence if no car. Parking on site.
Autumn smog in valley due to burning off by property owners nearby. Windows do not have flyscreens so mosquitoes a problem.

We have stayed here a number of times and it is always a wonderful experience. It is an easy drive from downtown Florence and the view is incredible. The breakfast and dinners are simple but delicious and always so fresh. The room furnishings are very simple but the atmosphere is so delightful it does not matter.
