Get fabulous steak - bistecca - or chicken at this old time classic. You need to look in the kitchen to see the cooking done over fire pits in a tiny space. Our steak was beautifully cooked. Service was attentive at first, but it took a while to get our check. Reservations are needed way in advance as this is a popular place.

Wow! This place has been here since the 1800s and it rocks! Must have reservations. Two sittings at 7:30 and 9:00. You sit family style which i think is marvelous. The steak florentine is amazing. Bread is warm. Service very personal. Seriously... I cannot imagine visiting Florence and not eating here. No credit cards, so bring cash. Old school Florence at its finest and most affordable.

I ate at this restaurant because it's supposedly known for its florentine steak. I researched online for the best florentine steak in florence and SOSTANZA kept cropping up. Sad to say though --thie steak was just okay. Nothing great. We've had better. Service was also not great either - you would have to wait a while for ur order to be taken. Would not come back here.

While sharing communal tables with whomever happens to drop by, enjoy their amazing chicken dish or have them slice a slab of beef just to your liking. Very small but VERY good!

Of all the meals we had during our week in Florence this was the most memorable -- not just for the food but also for the ambience, the wonderfully old-fashioned room, the helpfulness of the waiter, the opportunities for people-watching, and the fascinating glimpses into the kitchen.
But it's the food that's astonishing! Petti di pollo al burro: two sizeable chicken breasts which arrived in a battered metal dish of literally boiling butter and were simply delicious. Trippa alla Fiorentina: much, MUCH nicer than you'd ever think tripe could be! Tortellini in sugo: tiny pasta parcels in a wonderful meat sauce. A bottle of good Chianti Classico at a very reasonable price. And then some simple but brilliant sweet courses.
We missed out on the prosciutto, the bistecca alla Fiorentina, the gallina bollita and the tortino di carciofi. Next time! - we shall certainly go again.
(When we arrived just before our reserved time of 7.30pm, the metal shutter of the premises was still half down. My spirits fell as I wondered if we'd made a mistake with the booking. But right on the dot the shutter was pulled up, the white tiled dining room came into view and we went in to a warm welcome and a wonderful meal!)
