The restaurant was recommended to us by a knowledgeable enoteca waiter near Piazza Pitti. He made it sound great. In fact, it was only so-so. Limited wine list, good service, decent food presented nicely, decent atmosphere, but overall not worth the price. We had the classic Tuscan tasting menu for 55 euro each. The cooking was not up to the service. Another issue was that we were just off the plane and had not figured out the service charge business. We asked if it was included and a waitress said no. Turns out service was included, like almost all restaurants, which only added to our not worth it issue.

We went unfashionably early (around 7:30) & had the place to ourselves. The staff was great & their recommendations excellent. We loved the pate, carbonera & ravioli. Order the tasting desert! A little expensive but worth it.

The best meal we had in Florence, Oliviero is a lovely find, it has a very classy atmosphere, without being horribly stuffy. The food was delicious and the service seemless, the fresh bread they provide is lovely, and there were lots of nice touches such as a complimentary glass of Prosecco and a small "amuse bouche" on arrival. Not the cheapest meal, around €120 for 2 (though we did have steak, wine and dessert) but worth it as it was much more special than lots of the cheaper places.

Don't come expecting the usual pasta-pizza and insalatas joints that are teeming in the touristy parts of The city. This is an Art Deco style, fine dining establishment, frequented by well dressed locals and endorsed by Tuscan fine restaurants, Michelin and others. The atmosphere is dreary, to say the least, and the decor is long in the tooth. But when it comes to food and service - this is the place! Fills up after 8.30 in the evenings. Bookings recommended.
Starters: The Quail roasterd in lard with a paprika sauce and the beef carpaccio with pickled pearl onion and mini gherkins was wonderful - expertly different in taste and presentation. We had the linguine with beef ragout and Parmesan from the secondi, again excellent. The fillets of pan seared cod with a spiced tomato sauce just hit the spot. The wine was a Michele Satta Bolgheri (Tuscany), 2008, velvety and fruity. For desert the Bavarian creme in saffron served Demi glacé with blackberry sauce and marcsopone stuffed biscotti. Prices for two - around 120 euros including wine and taxes.

The Oliviero was directly behind our hotel the NH Porta Rossa. Reservations are necessary to secure a table as it is very popular. Two types of cuisine are offered - traditional and contemporary and the service is exceptional with the waiters being both discreet and attentive. The wine list provides excellent selection at various prices.
