Description: Twenty years ago, the Hapsburg Lorena princes decided to open a restaurant in Florence: La Giostra. The new of a noble family managing with dishes and napkins made headlines, but it was not a surprise to everyone. The friends who were accustomed to gathering around the table of the prince at the castle of Barberino Val d'Elsa, in Chianti, had often suggested him to do that. The restaurants that were supplied with olive oil, wine and other products of the family estate had always been feared of the idea ,as many of their best recipes they had drawn from the Prince own mouth. The son Soldano personally supervises the cellar, and he knew that passion would eventually infect and involve it in a full time job. The passion started in Vienna, when the grandmother used to takie the nephew in the kitchens of the castle -and the servants away-, showing him a "big magic": the sourdough of kraphens.. A fantastic spell that charmed the young prince, destined for a life to browse old manuscripts of recipes, anecdotes, and suggestions to prepare the traditional dishes of the Hapsburg Lorraine's.."The sciences are not as Minerva came all armed from the brain of Jupiter, are the daughters of time", here is the secret of La Giostra. We expect a typical kitchen and you will taste new flavors, ancient hundreds of years. The flavors of a Tuscany Lost, when still the place ,where the restaurant is now located, covered by arches sixteenth century in red brick hosted the tournament in Piazza Salvemini, that is the reason of the name . Where shiny horses rested, today there are just sixteen tables, at which sit couples in love, beautiful women, celebrity guests, sometimes entire theater companies ... All united by the love for good food and the pleasure of a refined hospitality: in a "homley", home, warm and informal.. Merit of the prince's son, first of all. Merit of flattering reviews from the specialized press. Merit of the historic chef Ubaldo Tonarelli, Florentine doc who is now joined by a number of new talents. Merit of Liliana, who every morning kneads pappardelle noodles and ravioli, bolognese style, with all the freshness of the ingredients freshly picked. A 'merry band of dispensers of joy ... "Because food is necessary and choosing is a privilege, but cooking is art".

“Lovely atmospheric dinner”
Reviewed October 12, 2013

This restaurant provided a lovely atmospheric last night in Florence. Warm welcome, fun wait staff, efficient service & wine recommendations. The menu is a bit different to the normal Florentine offerings - a bit more of a contemporary twist on the classics, which suited us well. There was so much food in the complimentary tasting plate on arrival, that we had no room for dessert at the end! It is a little dearer than competitors, but judging by the queue outside when we left, that was not putting anyone off. Reservations are definitely needed here.

“Best restaurant in Florence”
Reviewed October 10, 2013 via mobile

A local Florentine recommended we go to her favorite restaurant. It's now our favorite Florence restaurant. We have been 3times. Soldano the owner is very entertaining, the food is incredible & the atmosphere is not the typical tourist spot. The plate of small bites brought out after you order are delicious. Pasta was great as was the fresh fish. Dessert was perfect, but share its a big portion. Can't wait to eat there again.

“Excellent pick for a great meal”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

The food and ambiance are delicious at this well know restaurant. You are greeted with prosecco when you come in which puts you right at ease even though you have to wait for your table. The owner, bracelets and all, greets you at your table. While a little pricey, it is a thoroughly enjoyable and special meal that you will remember. I have been back twice on two separate trips to Florence in the past year. Will return again!

“Amazing food and wonderful ambience”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

My husband and I went to this restaurant in Florence and it was definitely the best dinner we had while visiting Florence. Amazing ambience, excellent pasta and wine. I had the veal marsala as my entree - it was delicious. The ceiling is lined with old lights and and the tables are lit by candlelight creating a really romantic feel.

“Great steak and truffle pasta!”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

I booked this restaurant because celebrities dine here when they visit Florence so I figured it must be good. Tucked away in dark alley, this restaurant is beautifully lit and so romantic. The menu was in Italian but the owner's son came and pretty much read the menu in English for us.

We had the mixed salad, white truffle pasta, and goose liver with steak. The mixed salad was below average - not much taste to it, but the white truffle pasta and the goose liver with steak was to die for. A nice couple we met gave us a taste of their Florentine t-bone steak and it was so succulent and juicy.

The overall bill came to 110 Euros which wasn't bad considering the quality of food we had (truffles, goose liver and steak) and included a bottle of wine. Oh, it also included complimentary prosecco and plate of appetizers. Highly recommended!
