“Second time around”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

This is our second stay at Eden Rock, 2.5 years after our first. The first time we stayed for 10 nights, this time around for 6 nights - so that should say something about how much we enjoy it.

If you're looking for the hustle and bustle of the Old City, you won't find it here. There's no cobblestone streets, centuries old buildings and hordes of people.

But the Old City is only 15 minutes away by bus, or less by car. We use it as a base not only to get-to-know and explore Firenze, but the surrounding countryside of Tuscany, including Umbria and Chianti and to the coast.

Eden Rock is a contemporary renovation of an establishment built in the 1950s into a wonderful location on the side of a rock in the hills to the north of Florence. It has a gorgeous picture postcard view across to the other hill of Fiesole and down the valley to the Duomo and old city - of itself, this is enough to instill a sense of calm and tranquility. The suites are comfortable, have everything you need (perhaps a microwave would be helpful) and are of high quality without being over-the-top. The breakfast is balanced. While a limited menu - which is understandable - the in-house lunch/dining was surprisingly very good and tasty on the one occasion we used it.

But most of all, what brought us back is the people. Led by Daniele, who is wonderful, and including Walter, Sylvia & others, the staff are friendly, warm, efficient and helpful.

We don't know when we will return to Firenze but we will; and when we do, we will stay here again.

In the meantime, Forza Viola!

We arrived at Eden Rock after a disappointing experience at our previous place. What a contrast! From the moment we arrived we were made to feel as welcome as long-lost friends. The management and staff were amazing - friendly, helpful, willing to go the extra mile to ensure we had a good time. Which we did. The rooms are suites, well appointed, spacious, stylish. Food was excellent and it was so relaxing to eat by the pool in a peaceful, secure environment. Views from the rooms were up to Fiesole and down to Florence. The night view from the roof stays in the memory. Terrific, and highly recommended.

Florence was a last stop... called and made a reservation. From the outside, it is nothing special. The manage took my bag and brought us the Imperial Suite... Wow, what a suite!! 2 floors, I love this suite! The view, the decor, everything!
The manage Daniel is so great, very helpful and guiding us where to visit in the area. Love to retune to this place!

The pictures are exactly as depicted - our view was high above over looking the town of Florence.
Relaxing on our balcony in the evening after a full day of touring was a perfect way to end the day. Daniel the hotel manger was very helpful with all of our needs.
My only comment would be to understand a bus is needed to go into town. Never a problem catching a bus and we preferred staying out of the crowds in the city.

My husband and i stayed for 8 nights in early sept, we felt Eden rock provided the perfect combination for a relaxing city break for our first visit to Tuscany.  We spent our days enjoying the sun by the pool or admiring the views from our balcony. Late afternoon/early evening we would head into florence via the bus to enjoy great food and the beautiful architecture. Being near to florence the location is great for day trips to explore other areas in Tuscany (train to Pisa and a lovely day in chianti recommended by the hotel with under the Tuscan sun tours).

Positives
- Lovely views/setting in the hills looking out over Florence
- Pool area for relaxing and sunbathing (towels provided) it would be helpful to have a few freestanding parasols but there is plenty of shade options under trees.
- Hotel concierge and reception service is first class with a friendly welcome from Walter and excellent friendly service and advise always from both Walter and Daniele.
- Rooms are very large with good facilities, we were in room 201 with separate living/kitchen area inc a fridge, coffee machine, 2 ring hob and dishwasher.
- Lovely large balconies to enjoy pre dinner drinks.
- Small resort just 12 rooms making it friendly and relaxed (often feels like you are the only person in the resort) with a mixture of guests from all nationalities.
- Music by the pool and bar area.

Ok
- Room style is more functional vs stylish, also not new but is well maintained.
- Restaurant - good as a breakfast and lunch option but after day 4, breakfast  gets a little boring.  For dinner although the menu has lots of options it seems a waste not to go into Florence but nice to have as an option.  service was always friendly and efficient especially at breakfast.
-The bus great value and easy with advise provided by Daniele and walter,  when you get your bearings.

Negatives
- Noise from the road it's single track but as it's on a steep hill you can hear cars/buses most of the day by the pool and on your balcony although you can't really see the road as it  is well hidden by trees.
- Drainage smell usually in the evenings which I think is linked to the irrigation  system  not great but also a common issue in Florence during warmer weather.
- Unhelpful bus drivers (not fault of hotel) they will not tell you when to get on or off or answer any questions you have, do don't bother asking.
- As the resort is small it is sometimes difficult to find bar staff during the day, it would be great to have an honesty book for soft drinks and water.

The Bus
When you arrive you will be provided with a timetable and all the details you need to catch the bus, but if you would like to know these things in advance here you go.

Bus  25 or 25a tends to run every 20mins taking 10-15 mins to get into the city. our first bus into Florence  was 6.01am and last bus at 00.30 back to the hotel.

Catching the bus  - 10-15mins before you need to catch the bus pop down to reception and ask for a lift to the bus stop (Walter and Daniele are more than happy to do this) it's only a 2min drive in the car but on a busy road so I recommend you take the lift.
You can buy tickets in a shop/pub at the bus stop where they drop you off, It's 4.75 euro for a two person return ticket (a taxi is between 15-25euro depending on traffic each way) and you can buy multiple bus tickets.

The bus stop is 50yrds from the shop and in our experience the bus tends to run on time or slightly early.  When you get on the bus put you ticket into the machine (there is one at the front and back of the bus)to date stamp it. Your ticket is then valid for any bus for the next 90mins.

You will want to get off at stop San marco (which is a square where most people get off) you  can also catch other busses in this area or close by apparently bus 13 is a nice scenic route around the city.

Returning you can pick the bus up from the same place or at the first stop just slightly round the corner  on via giorgio la pira where the bus often waits for 5-10mins

Getting off at the right place for eden rock is a little more tricky as the road  is very dark at night.  we used the digital display inside the bus as advised by daniele when you go past the stop that you got on at you need three more stops, Bolognese Nuevo, then Bolognese Nuevo 3 and then Bolognese Nuevo 5 As soon as you see 5 press the stop button( sometimes the driver is going very fast) but don't  worry if you get it wrong, you can call the hotel and they will come and collect you just tell them the name of the stop you are at (all the stops have their name on the top of the bus stop sign).

We recently spent 3 days at the wonderful Eden Rock hotel from the 27 - 30 August. The hotel manager Daniel was amazing before we even arrived, offering to book tickets for the Florentine museums, meaning we arrived at each one at our alloted time, collected our tickets and queued for no more than 10 minutes. Upon arrival we greeted by Daniel who speaks perfect English (helpful as shamefully we speak no Italian) and were upgraded to the Romantic suite which was amazing with a spectacular view of Florence. The hotel is beautifully clean with sleek modern decor, the pool is wonderful as is the pool side food and beverage service, and with so few rooms we really did feel like we had the place to ourselves. Dont be put off by the distance from the city centre, the bus stop to Florence is a short walk from the hotel, but the staff will run you down to the stop by car if you prefer. Buses are really regular and you are provided with a timetable on arrival. You can catch the bus back up the hill from central Florence and it drops you off right outside the hotel. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Breakfast at the hotel was lovely, with a good selection of items. We also ate dinner at the hotel one evening by the pool and the food and service was excellent. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, thank you to Daniel and the team, we will be back.

P.S
I have selected that the fitness centre was excellent below by accident. There is no gym at the hotel, but it would be a great addition.

Room Tip: The romantic suite was beautiful, views over florence when you wake up in the morning.

This is without doubt a stunning setting and spectacular views but for me that's where the positives stop.

We stayed for 2 nights as a rest, after touring Tuscany.

The room on the 3rd floor (no lift, only part of the way) which is very spacious and modern having all the facilities you require.
Although it has the mod cons it totally lacks character and feels very sterile. There are no pictures on the corridor walls to the room, so it feels a bit like a hospital visit.
The pool is of average size and really is for sitting around rather than swimming. The bar is attached to the pool as is the restaurant and really that is it, there seems to be nothing else except your room.
In the room you do have a Kitchenette which is hidden behind a motorized blind, but as the gentleman pointed out who showed us around, we wont be needing that as we were on holiday. He did point out the mini bar/fridge which had a couple of beers and a few fizzy drinks in, at interesting prices.
I could also watch over 900 TV channels but a lot of those are at additional cost by contacting reception.
Anyway why would you want to watch TV when you are so close to beautiful Florence? I hear you ask.

OK so off to Florence, 20- 30 Eros in a Taxi or get the local bus. The Hotel will drive you to a local bar where you can purchase a bus ticket and get the number 25 into town.
I did feel for the room rate there would possibly be a minibus service in to town, but may be that's me being picky.
Whilst we are on room rate I opened the wardrobe and nearly had a heart attack as our room rate is listed on the 'Cartellino prezzi' as 1050.00 Euro per day 7350.00 Euro per week !

So back to the local bar waiting for the bus, my suggestion is buy your drinks here and take them back to your room. The bus runs every 20 mins and the last one leaves at 00.15 from San Marco square and the bus stop you need is 'Nuova Bolognese 5'.
Or just allow an extra 40 Eros per visit to Florence via Taxi

So all in all Eden Rock/suites/hotel has stunning views and spacious rooms and that is about it. You could get a lot more for your money in town and catch the bus up the hill to look at the view.

Room Tip: Ask about stairs if you are at all worried about them
