“Home away from home”

When we were planning our trip to Florence, one of our objective was to stay at a nice boutique hotel - at the end, it boiled down to a choice between Riva and Casa Howard. Since I was very tempted by the Wallpaper article on Riva and our preferred room at Casa was not available, we opted for Riva. It exceeded our expectations at every possible way.

Their website provides enough photos for you to have a sense of the decor so I'll not dwell on the topic here. It suffice to say that it's so tastefully done that only an architect/interior designer could have pulled it off. It's modern but there're always one or two details which remind you of the history of the buildings (formerly studios of craftsman if I remember correctly). At Riva, the sophisticated and the rustic, the sublime and the mundane blend together effortlessly. It's an oasis of tranquillity from the over-crowded city center of Florence.

Alice and her staff are wonderful - always pleasant and ready to help. It's not exactly cheap to stay at Riva but it's well worth it. Unlike some upscale hotels in Europe/UK, there is no pressure on you to raid the mini-bars. A few bottles of mineral water and juice are complimentary - a considerate gesture since I don't think there is any convenience stores within the 2 mile radius of the hotel.

A stay at Riva is an experience in itself. Highly recommended for travellers who enjoy staying at stylish yet friendly boutique hotels!

Riva Lofts is very spacious and comfortable, and the modern decor was a welcome change. Bathroom was a bit dark, but the shower was wonderful. Bed was very comfortable, and the room separator lent ambiance. Nice wide open living space with a small table and chairs by the kitchen area (we had a deluxe, non-loft room). Flat panel TV and chairs at the far end of the living space (but won't need that in Florence).
We had a corner room that opened up to the pool/garden area, and we kept the door and window open in the evening for the breeze. (Note, air con was not working, which did not matter in early June, but would be a drag in July/August). The bigger lofts have a view of the Arno, and look very large and dramatic.
Walk to the Ponte Vecchio took us 20 minutes give or take, and due to construction, it's a bit doggie 1/2 km from the hotel, but then it becomes quite nice - and if you are not in a hurry, wonder the neighborhoods - there are some wonderful restaurants in Oltrarno.
Alice was fabulous - very helpful and considerate. The grounds were lovely, and the pool looked inviting (a nice feature for the warmer months). If you want something older, closer to the Ufitzi, and "grandly Italian", then Riva Lofts is not a good fit. But if you are looking for modern accommodations with every convenience, in a smaller, more intimate setting away from the crowds, then I recommend the Riva Lofts.
