We stayed at Hotel Villa Il Castagno for 4 nights, after the first night we commented on how many mosquito bites we had when we woke up, thinking nothing of it we went out and toured florence. After 2 more nights of this and realising that we hadn't actually seen any mosquitoes or even opened the window we came to the conclusion that there were bed bugs. Our bodies were covered all over, it was truly disgusting. When we approached the receptionist about his he said that it was "impossible". He explained that he HIMSELF! had moved the new bed into the room no less than 1 week ago. He then asked us to find a doctor to substantiate our claims, when our faces showed the absurd nature of this request he said that we had been drinking too much in the room, once again our faces betrayed our surprise at this allegation, he then said that it must be lice from our heads. Dumbfounded with these obtuse allegations we shook our heads with concern. Assuring us once again the impossibility of our claim he promised us the bed was fire proof, urging us to test this. When we explained that it was not fire but bed bugs we were concerned with he said "impossible" and stormed out of the room. Apart from this no one in the hotel speaks english and it is a long walk (at least 30 minutes) to get to the center. If you do make the mistake of staying here DO NOT follow their instructions to the hotel, they are misleading and tell you to take the bus but not which stop to get off. After 5 months travelling in Europe this was the most disappointing service we have experienced the whole time.

Room Tip: avoid the rooms with bed bugs.

This is a no-frills, clean hotel, outside of town, for a low price. It is located not too far from one of Florence's train station, but a 20-30 minute walk from the Duomo. Note: there is no elevator and our AC was "broken." A nice breakfast was included. Try the restaurant nearby, Pepe, and get their specialty Pepe chicken.... delicious!!!

A Nice clean place to stay near Florence.

Good things:
clean
good value
5 min away from center by car
lost of stores near by

Bad things:
staff not very helpful
beds were REALLY hard
Internet is 5€ for 24hrs (not bad) but it doesent work!

Overall, I would tell you the place is not bad. If you are looking for "help and guidance" you won't get it here.

The wiifi really sucks here so don't waste your time and if you want wiifi for more than one divice, food luck trying to get two codes from them.

My wife and I stayed 5 nights at this hotel, on our 5 city travel in Europe. Compared to the other facilities we stayed in Spain and taly, this was the most humble by far, and the one that we ended least pleased.
The hotel is not that far from the city center, if you are used to public transport: 3 blocks away from the bus stop to go to the center, and the bus stop to return drops you pretty close to the hotel.
What the hotel has to offer for the price charged, is really poor. Forget about anything but one tiny bar of soap on the bathroom for your whole stay (we had to ask for a second roll of toilet paper after it ended, because they didn´t replace it; or shower towels, because they hadn´t provided us with them). People who attend are nice, but not of much help. Seems more like a family trying to run a bussines, than an administration staff. Very little personel, and you see the same person doing various tasks. The door closes almost after sunset, and you may not find anybody on the front desk once they remotley open the outside door; just pick your room key yourself, and if you need anything, live without it until the next day.
Breakfast is served from 8 to 10, in a city where museums and other attractions start at 8:15. So, it may mean no breakfast at all. But don't worry, you'll be better off anywhere else, because breakfast means a cup of coffee and bread. That's it.
The rooms where ok for European standards, but compared to the services we got on other hotels on our trip (for the same or even less price) Villa il Castagno was not worth what we paid.
