“decent hotel, great location, great price”
Reviewed May 22, 2010

Amazing location for the price! You can walk pretty much anywhere in the city center and to/from the train station. Rooms weren't fancy, but clean & comfortable. We happened to get a room with a great view. The breakfast was pretty meager - some cereals, juices, croissants and dry toast with butter/jam. Customer service was ok overall - but I wasn't expecting much. The staff also have info on the city and you can get free wireless or a pass to use the computer upstairs. N.B. there is only one computer available and Italy's internet usage policy is quite strict, so be prepared to provide your personal details to use it. There is also an interesting little market outside that sets up everyday where you can get a great deal on leather goods!

The Giada Hotel is one of those gems, right in the middle of the city, only a few minutes from the Central train station and the Duomo. Service was very friendly, they went out of their way to help with a few small requests. Breakfast was very good for a budget hotel, cereals and juice, plus tea, coffee and pastries. A little than the average Italian fair.
The rooms look like they have been recently refurbished, soundproof windows took away the street noise. Clean rooms, reasonably large and great bathroom, all of this at a very reasonable price.
The markets are in the front of the hotel, so a great atmosphere as soon as you arrive.
I would go back again.

Giada Hotel is very conveniently situated within a short walking distance from the Santa Maria Novella train station, and from most of the cultural sights in Florence. My partner chose to stay here, firstly because we received an incredible rate on Expedia (although for the price we paid, we weren't expecting too much, nor were we disappointed), and secondly because we really didn't care where we stayed in Florence because we planned to be out and about most of the time anyway, whether in the city centre, or in Tuscany at large. So the long and short of it is that we received a reasonably clean, no frills room, for a price that I had feared may have been a website error.

Luckily, I confirmed by email with the hotel that my reservation had been received and that it was fully paid. Service also is no frills. Sometimes there would be no one at reception, and people obviously affiliated with the hotel milling about but making no attempt to help us, and other times we had very good assistance in organising the free wifi, etc. It seemed to depend who was on duty as to how good the service was!

One of our main worries was that we had read reviews complaining about the noise. The room we received was on the third floor from the street, with a small window facing what I took to be an inner courtyard, so we didn't have any problems with noise. With decent air conditioning and no night-time noise, the sleep was reasonably pleasant.

One final issue that might be of concern to others, but just a mild annoyance to us, is the fact that Giada Hotel is situated in the middle of the markets. This is fine in the middle of the day, but it can seem a bit seedy a neighbourhood at night. We never felt worried about any of our late comings and goings, but this might be something that others may put more weight on, for various reasons.

The Hotel Giada is a good value for the location and amenities offered. This is not a high-class hotel, but nor are you paying those prices. The location close to the Duomo and heart of Florence was very nice, we were able to easily walk everywhere. The hotel was clean & the staff was helpful.
One thing I would warn about - there seem to be two sleeping rooms directly off of the kitchen area, and with the staff banging around all morning that was VERY loud - I can't imagine anyone being happy in those rooms. If you are a morning person and out of bed early, this probably wouldn't affect you.
The breakfast was typically Euro spartan, with some breads, meats, cereals, juices, etc.
To find the place easier, print out the street-level view from Google maps, it was quite easy to find (a large "hotel giada" sign didn't hurt either!).

The hotel is situated smack bang in the middle of the San Lorenzo markets - which is great if you're a keen shopper and we didn't find the location too noisy either. However, our stay started with a confusing interaction where the receptionist offered us an alternative room because ours was apparently not ready - but when we viewed the alternative (larger but horrible) and said we'd wait, our room suddenly became available. Our room was too small to even put our two suitcases on the floor, was very shabby - ie big scratches all over the walls, and the shower was so tiny I had trouble raising my arms to wash my hair. That said, we were only staying one night and barely spent any time in the room other than sleeping, so it still represented good value due to the location. The breakfast was decent - I remember good rolls and bread. Just be aware that you may end up with a room that looks nothing like their photos.

If you're on a budget and need a wonderful place to stay in Florence, email Eva ([--]) at the Hotel Giada. The central location, with a view of Michelangelo's New Sacristy in San Lorenzo, is fantastic. It is comfy, clean, and the owner, Eva, just might become your friend for life. :>) The breakfast room is so cozy, I have entertained thoughts of settling in to write a novel. As for the neighborhood-- it has everything, along with a high ratio of locals to temper the tourists.
