My habit is to only review the places that my wife and I have found to be very good. Trattoria Giovanni is at the high end of that spectrum. This place is new and is spotless. That is obviusly due to Giovanni's (owner?) efforts. The setting is rustic and intimate with a kind of modern feel. There is very little English spoken or understood here. Reservations are important. But, my wife and I are in an apartment around the corner and walked in on a whim at 6:30 on a Saturday. Giovanni explained in Italian that the front room was reserved for a large party, but that we could come back at 7 and dine as long as the table would be free by 9:30. We took him up on his offer and were the first people in the restaurant. Within 20 minutes the place filled up with diners under the same understanding. In a couple of cases Giovanni asked me to translate.
We had marinated herring, ribollita, house chianti, aqua minerale, wild boar with polenta, country style steak with lard, side of roasted potatoes, and an amazing tiramisu. The bill with everything (including tip) was 72 euro. As we were about to leave, Giovanni came to the table and asked if we would like some grappa. We took him up on his offer and finished off a cena meraviglosa. Warm, friendly, unobtrusive service and fine carefully prepared food. We are halfway through a one month stay and this has been our best meal out. Good enough that we already made our reservation for Easter dinner. Buon appetito!
