The Hotel Bretagna is walking distance from the important sites in Florence, on the river and somewhat away from the crowds. Altogether a wonderful location for a visit to Florence. We had a back room that was spacious and quiet. The beds had extra foam that made them much more comfortable. The front desk staff were knowledgeable and helpful.

Location, location, location. Walking distance to all of the major sites on both sides of the Arno River but not the crowds which spoil parts of Florence. The Junior Suite with River View for 4 adults(two sets of best friends celebrating big birthdays but would also be good for a couple with 2 children as more like 2 rooms in layout) was a great start to our 10 day trip in Italy. 3 beds so only one set of friends had to share a king bed. Very little time is spent in the room anyway. The small wrought iron balcony off the reception area on the second floor is great for taking pictures of the views to the east which include the picturesque Ponte Vecchio(better viewed from the bridges on either side than actually walking over it with the crowds of tourists that rarely venture further). Also for sunsets over the bridges to the west on the Arno River. The buffet breakfast is close by so you can also finish your second cup of cappuccino on that balcony in the sun. The same great views can be had from the big wide ledge window in the room with big old shutters that opened up to another great view across the Arno River to the Oltrarno area and the dome of Santo Spirito. A great place to sip wine while waiting for the other girls to get ready. The staff recommended small family restaurants located in the Oltrarno side which were filled by locals and reasonably priced with friendly service. Also found the best little gelato place over there not far from Ponte Vecchio called Vivaldi and small unique family owned gift stores. Restaurants were 4 Leoni(check out the pear ravioli), Cinghiale Bianco(White Boar) so check out wild boar sauce on pici pasta, and Osteria Santo Spirito and Borga Anticain in the lovely S. Spirito Pliazzo. Then when you cross back over the Arno River at night to see the Duomo lit up it will be less crowded and then head to Piazza della Republica for a live outdoor band that plays until 1 in the morning at one of the bars. The Belvedere Fort overlooking the Boboli Gardens has just reopened so with comfortable shoes you can walk up there from the Oltrarno side and have one of the best views of the city before heading down and back up to the touristy Piazzale Michelangelo for more views. There is also a small restaurant and bar up at the Fort and outdoor seating. And a small gift store that sells perfume made right in Florence. I have stayed in Florence before and this was the best location yet. With roller luggage you could walk from the Santa Maria train station. And you should not have anything bigger than carry on anyway for a trip to Italy! If 4 women of a certain age can do it, anyone can.

Room Tip: Take a river view room and make your stay in Florence extra special. The river is very wide so it is...

We stayed at the Hitel Bretagnya for 3 nights. Hotel is very nice and central to everything. The staff are lovely, especially the reception staff who were able to organise a doctor very quickly when my husband was not well. Breakfast was good.

My wife and I recently returned from a 4 week trip to Germany and Italy. Of all the places we stayed the Hotel Bretagna clearly topped the list. Great location within walking distance of everything. Nice room...very clean. Great breakfast. Importantly, the staff were terrific...helpful, courteous, and very please to deal with. We have already recommended it to several friends.

We were sooo glad we chose the Bretagna, as its location on the Arno provides a welcome refuge from the bustle of Florence and easy access to the good (and less expensive) restaurants on the other bank. If you can, splurge a bit for a junior suite (still less than many std rooms in hotels near the Duomo), and come back in the afternoons for a nap in a large room bathed in the afternoon sunlight while rowers glide up and down and the river. As other reviewers have said, the staff is just tremendous here, and the breakfast one of the best we found anywhere. If was going back, I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

Service was fantastic, mostly due to the super friendly and helpful staff. No matter what time of the day/night they were always available to help, with a smile on the face. And the location is perfect, $6 EUR cab ride from the train station, just by the river and walking distance to anywhere in Florence. Breakfast was also nice.
