Vivaldi Gelateria, located on Via Renai in the Oltrarno, is truly a hidden gem in a city that boasts molte buone gelaterie. During our visit to Florence in November, we enjoyed a mixed bag of weather. On the pleasantly warm days the gelato was the best we've ever had (including Siena, Rome, Venice, and many small villages throughout Tuscany). On the chilly overcast days we had the BEST hot chocolate. EVER. It was dark, sweet, and had the consistency of sludge. YES, sludge!! Because you want your hot chocolate to be so thick the spoon nearly stands up in the cup! There is a back room where you can sit and relax. It has an eclectic style of homey furniture, modern wall art, and not-too-loud jazzy music. (Shouldn't they be playing Vivaldi??) The staff is exceptionally friendly and solicitous. And the prices are fair. There is also an espresso bar. Do not miss this remarkable treat.
