I had first stayed at Villa Tolomei in the weeks after its initial launch - it was wonderful. What attracted me to the property is the ample parking it has available, which was very convenient given that we had driven to Florence from Rome. I went back 2 years ago, and more recently, in December 2018. My last trip will be my last, I am sad to say. The parking remains abundant, but the property has slipped from the standards it had first demonstrated.....by a lot. The outside is overrun with weeds, the staff is rude and unprofessional, the grounds are overrun with weeds, the gym and the pool area I don think have had any maintenance done in years. The rooms and hallways had the heat turned up to levels where we had to open the windows (in December), with little reprieve. Also, I had forgotten how many steps there are within the property, which is a warren of corridors - very tough if you have luggage and kids. Keep an eye on the kids - if they run off, they can get disoriented, which can result in screams! Have recommend the hotel in the past - will never recommend it again. Im taking a train next time and staying in the city.

First class experience. Staff friendly and helpful. Rooms well appointed, large and luxurious. Breakfast buffet very good. Evening is 'Fine Dining' and expect high end of the market prices. You will need a taxi each time you go into downtown Florence costing about Euros 20/-.
The walk is too long and uphill all the way back. Buses are hourly and not on time.

Room tip: go for a suite

It may be simple, call me old fashioned, but I’d just like a good night sleep & cold running water what staying in any hotel, let alone a ‘5 star resort’.

Sadly we didn’t get either of these things. Both nights we stayed here the noise travelling around the block was ridiculous & kept us both awake from the early hours. Which is crazy when the hotel is situated remotely in the hills above Florence.

The taps in our room would also only poor hot water, making it impossible to brush our teeth etc. Again, cool running water seems basic....

The hotel does stand up to expectation on look, location, breakfast & friendliness of staff. But sadly none of that makes up for the basics being done properly.

Avoid!

A very nice, beautifully placed villa, fresh air everywhere. Personnel professional and very servicable. Restaurant has some awesome dishes available for reasonable prices. (Ricotta Cheese and Nettle Ravioli with Scampi, Marjoram, Bottarga and Tomato coulis). We missed one night (out of three) due to child illness and had no cancellation insurance and therefore had to pay that night as well. As a fine gesture, we received an upgrade from double room to junior suite.

Very recommendable !

We were blown away by this 14th century villa on arrival. Beautiful decor, great room and amazing views. The staff were lovely, friendly and so helpful and the pool, which was one of the main reasons for booking this hotel, was heated, clean and great to swim in. The gym had very good equipment and it even had a Turkish steam room.
We ate in the restaurant one night and, although very pricey, it was fantastic!
What lets the hotel down however is that the breakfasts are typically Italian ie very sparse. If you like cake, cheese and ham then you’re onto a winner but the selection of cereals ( not even muesli) juices ( just orange) and the absence of mushrooms, beans and sausages didn’t go down well with us at all!
Although we loved the Tuscan views from the hotel and the vineyards and olive groves we didn’t love that we either had to get a taxi ( approx 15 euros a trip) or the local bus ( every hour and not Sundays) to the City of Florence.
Also, the hotel only provided 2 bottles of water in our room for the first night - after that you had to buy it which, for a five star hotel is not acceptable.
Saying all that though, we had a lovely time and will certainly recommend this hotel.

Room tip: We slept well as it was very quiet so I expect any room will be as good as ours was.
