We were a group of 9 friends visiting Tuscany. We found Villa Merlaia to be a great location and a roomy and charming house. We had a wonderful time enjoying the terrace and the pool. The location up on the hill is several degrees cooler than Firenze. Best of all getting in to Florence was easy — as soon as you get used to the winding mountain road that leads to it! Bus or car transportation both worked well, especially if you are willing to walk a ways into the center. Andrea the landlord was SO nice! We only wished there were more restaurants nearby.

“Authentic & Lovely”

Planning a trip for sixteen family members to Florence can be a challenge. We wanted to be close enough to Florence to enjoy all the magnificence of the city and still be all together in a home setting. This lovely villa was the perfect solution. We found an apartment in Santa Croce for the twenty-somethings and we were located close enough for them to join us every evening for dinner. Access to the historical center is a quick cab ride away. The cabs were extremely efficient and the wait time for a cab was usually 3-6 minutes. Walking into town is possible. It's about a 30 minute walk. The cost for a cab was on average 12 Euros. We rented the Hunting Lodge and the Cottage to accommodate our family. Staying here felt like staying in an authentic Italian home. The kitchen was perfectly equipped to cook elaborate dinners. There is a full sized refrigerator, a coffee maker and an Nespresso machine. Our hostess and her staff were extremely gracious. They checked and double checked to make sure we had whatever we needed. They even brought over an additional table to add to the dining room so that we could all be seated for dinner together. The historical aspects of this ancient house are fascinating. Portions of painted murals from the 11th century were preserved and are visible upstairs. Our lovely hostess shared stories about the history of the house that included occupancy by a member of the Medici family. The house has five bathrooms and the cottage has one bathroom. Most are completely updated and all are very clean. Keep in mind that you are staying in a home, not a hotel, so there is no maid service. Additional linens were supplied to us when we requested them. A couple of the bedrooms would benefit from new mattresses but ours was quite comfortable. The villa grounds are quite secure and absolutely beautiful! The wi-fi was free and worked perfectly. There is a very modern grocery store located close-by. It took about ten minutes to walk there. We've traveled extensively in Europe and this stay was one of our favorites. Firenze is an amazing city and it's not an easy task to find a place that will accommodate such a large group this close to the historical center.

We stayed in this villa including the cottage for 3 nights with 9 people. The house is beautiful, clean, nicely decorated. Lots of toilets and showers which are nice and hot. Wifi is available and strong enough throughout the house. The kitchen is fully equipped. You can find everything you need even when cooking for a large party of 18 people. The swimming pool surrounded by olive trees is nice on a hot day. Staff is very friendly and helpful. City center is within walking distance or one can take a bus. Upon arrival we were presented with a large basket of food and drinks with all the essentials needed for a simple meal and lots of fruit. I highly recommend this villa. We had a wonderful time.
