After just arriving from Rome, TOURIST CENTRAL, my family and I were absolutely sick of being taken for a ride and having to venture out of the city to find decently good Italian food without being scammed for being tourists. In Florence, we were thrilled to come across Circus, which although resides in a very touristy location, was not at all so.
My mom stopped to ask the man at the front of the restaurant directions for somewhere and they got to talking. This gentleman ended up being the GM and a very experienced sommelier. After explaining that we were dying to try some authentic fettuccini alfredo at least once in Italy, so we weren't going to be able to eat there (this is not on their menu), the GM assured us that they could make it for us anyway. We took a risk, figuring that we just got lured into another tourist trap, but we couldn't have been more wrong.
We had phenomenal meals - the fettucini alfredo, fried zucchini sticks and pesto gnocci were the best. The GM even brought over a few different samples of the various breads they make (outside of the usual basket of bread) and complimentary limoncello after the meal. We didn't spend a ton of money but were treated like royalty. The patio is gorgeous, we sat out there.
The GM explained in our one hour chat after the meal (what a great guy) that the restaurant had just opened in March 2012 and was the only one in the piazza that actually employed an Italian head chef. This was obvious by the quality of food. It was all made fresh and he explained that they were trying to offer people an exceptional view with amazing, fresh, real Italian food without being a tourist trap. We were finally treated with the respect we deserved after being talked down to in Rome at every single restaurant and blatantly lied to about the menu items.
VISIT THIS RESTAURANT and you will have a relaxing, delicious meal from people who genuinely want to share their passion for good food. Also, look up to the 4th floor of the building and you'll see a little hidden secret - a ceiling fresco by the one and only Michaelangelo!
