“A gem”

Michaelangelo designed the steps leading up to this amazing library. Readers sat in pews and books were brought to them. It has a magical calm and beauty

“A lovely calm Renaissance library with a fascinating exhibition in Rotunda”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2013

This was a pleasant rather serendipity visit. The library and staircase were elegant and functional, and there was an exhibition of the three Books of Hours made for the Medici daughters, beautiful little jewelled books which combine a calendar with a prayer book and other useful medievalia, and lots of illustrations. There were replicas which could be handled and pages under glass with explanations.

“Michelangelo, architect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 2, 2013

If you can't get enough of Michelangelo, you shouldn't miss this. Yes, it's one more entrance fee, but this may be the most famous staircase in the history of art. Michelangelo turns architecture into sculpture in the vestibule of this library. The reading room itself is just gorgeous, and there's likely to be an interesting exhibit in the rotunda.

“A relatively well-kept secret in the heart of Florence”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 27, 2012

Not a lot of tourists visit the Laurentian Library, and most of the ones that I do usually know about it because they are fans of Michelangelo (like me). The library was designed by Michelangelo himself. The vestibule and the staircase was a sight to behold, but the reading room was no less magnificent (and well-maintained!), although no books were in sight in this area. Still, you can see the writings on the side of the carrels indicating the types of books they held. All the books were collected in the exhibition area at one end of the library. The exhibit featured old and rare books, such as Herodotus’ Histories, Euripides’ Tragedies, Homer’s Works, and Plato’s Dialogues. If I remember correctly, there was a fee of about EUR3.
