Hotel Canada

Hotel Canada is a really a pensione, not a hotel. The rooms are spotless and mine was rather large. The owner was very gracious and sought to make my stay comfortable. She's always around, so you definitely feel looked after. I had a room with a shared bathroom, which was down the hall and across the common room. My room did have a sink, however. The shared bathroom was also very clean.

The location of this pensione was terrific. Just steps from the Piazza del Duomo, you hear the bells in the morning (so if you are a late sleeper, beware). It's also a short walk from all the major sights and a ten minute or so walk to the train station. You can't feel more "in the mix" at this spot.

Unfortunately, there is no air conditioning, and leaving the window open to get a nice Florence breeze was hampered by a lot of street noise, especially starting early in the morning. On hot Italian nights, the lack of air-con leaves one feeling a bit sticky. If you can, ask for a room on the other side of the building. There was wi-fi, but it didn't work well in my room and I had to either sit by the propped open door, or move to the common area.

On first impression, Pensione Canada seemed quite good, the room is pretty basic, but the price is good and the location is fantastic - walking distance from almost anything you might want to see in Florence. However, it turned into a nightmare. On the first night of our stay we were awoken at 2:00AM by the sound of very loud machinery. We waited for a few minutes hoping it would stop but it continued on. So we walked to the window to see what was making all the noise when we noticed the smell. Apparently it was a septic truck pumping sewage right outside our window and was filling our room with the most vile, unbearable smell I've ever experienced in my life. Within minutes we were overwhelmed and we were forced to flee our room along with another couple staying on the same side of the hotel. We sat with towels over our noses in a lobby area as far away from that side of the hotel as possible where the smell was slightly less. The truck continued pumping for about 3 hours. The second night of our stay the truck did not return, but according to another couple it had been there the night before as well. I have no idea how often this occurs and if you are on the other side of the hotel you may not be as affected, nonetheless it is certainly not worth the risk - look elsewhere.

The two best things about the Pensione Canada in Florence, Italy are its wonderful location just steps from the Piazza del Duomo (you can hear the bells), and the fact that it is absolutely clean and spotless.

However, if you have suitcases, you will have to drag them up two looooong flights of stairs. There is no one to help you. There is no air conditioning. However, we were supplied with a high-powered fan, which helped during a Florentine heat wave. No TV in the room. Even if you use the one in the lobby area, the proprietress (?), who must have been a policewoman or a drill sergeant or a strict school principal in a prior life, will make sure you turn it down to an inaudible level. No WiFi. 1 AM curfew, which was no problem for two old ladies. You have to stand in the street and press the buzzer and wait until someone responds to open the door to the street. If you request a room with a "private" bath, you will have to make an appearance in the hallway to use it, as none of the rooms opens into a bathroom. As we were flying ("fly naked") Ryan Air, we didn't have robes. As previously stated, you must pay your bill in cash, but there is a bank ATM around the corner. Take your ATM card! For heaven's sake don't take your room keys with you, have trouble with a door nor leave a light on if you don't want a lecture.

The beds are hard. If you like that, you may be able to get some sleep.

This is not your upscale hotel; it is a pension with down to earth accommodations. We stayed two nights. Te location is a few blocks from Duomo and all the sights. The Pension is on the 3rd floor and it is a walk up. Delecta (not sure of the spelling) was very nice and quickly showed us our room. The room itself was spartan but clean and roomy and we were rewarded with french doors that looked out on a brightly painted patio with beautiful plants. our private bath was next door to us, which was a bit awkward taking a key to lock and unlock every time, but it was fine. The standing shower was a bit tight for my husband. The only downside was the walls were thin and our neighbors snoring could be heard. Be aware that payment is requested in cash. The credit card is just for reservations. I would recommend it if you want a central location and simple accommodations.

The hotel is on a good location, in the middle of the center, close to the duomo and leather market. It was clean and the room we had, had a lot of space (we had one, with a private bathroom). The staff was very nice and helpfull.
But although it was on a great spot in the center we would not book it again;
-there is a 1 am curfew!!!!!!! Going out in Florence is not possible
-there is no internet excess
-there is no breakfast
-you have to pay cash although you booked with your creditcard

So for people that want to stay in the city center and go to bed not that late; it is a great hotel!
