From reading the other reviews there seems to be 2 Proconsolo Rooms. The one of Via Proconsolo, owned by a Croation lady, and another one owned by a Spanish lady - apparently called Proconsolo Rooms 2. We stayed for three nights at the first, which is the only one apparently offering 2-bed rooms. It was a great disappointment and nothing like it was advertised. No frescoes in the room, the windows could not close, the room far from nicely decorated, and there was no cleaning. Not even of the bathrooms during our entire stay. The common room, which was described as a place to relax, did not seem common at all, since the door was closed at all times and held the office of the owner. The absolutely only positve thing is the location, but besides from that it cannot be recommended.

I spent one week there in March 2004 with my sister and a friend. The hostel is actually behind the Duomo on the third floor of a historic (everything in that area is historic) building. The rooms are not huge, the furniture isn't that fancy, and there are 3 standard bathrooms. The location of this place is fantastic. If you go to Florence and are expecting to stay in your room, you need to have your head examined. There is nothing wrong with this place, and the owner was very friendly and was usually available for questions.

WHen I had a chance to stay in Italy for a few days after a conference, I booked the cheapest hostel I could find that didn't involve bunk beds and strangers- Proconsolo Rooms 2 at E18 per person per night. I wasn't expecting much- I figured we weren't going to be spending much time in a room anyway. Wow- apparently they own several apartments in Florence, and we got a bedroom in a 4-bedroom flat on the European third floor, with a shared sitting room and a balcony looking out directly onto the Duomo. (If you want to try to book it yourself, the address was of that flat was 13 Borgo Pinti.) Aside from having a fantastic view, it was clean, quiet, pleasant and located within a few minutes' walk of Santa Croce, the Duomo, the Piazza della Signoria, etc. If you've ever wanted to stay behind those huge imposing European doors- this is the place!

Proconsolo Rooms are very centrally located and cheap, which is the best I can tell. We had booked a four bedded room and actually had a double bed and one camp bed. No frescoed ceilings but stain due to water spotting... We?ve stayed there for one week and one of the three bathrooms was cleaned once! In the end taking a shower became rather disgusting. Nevertheless the host is very nice and helps you, whenever you need help. Moreover there is no curfew, what makes it sometimes very loud at night...

Stayed there in March 2004. Horrible! A look at their webpage is totally misleading. Frescos...hmm..only in three rooms. Other rooms are horrible, no heating (7-9 degrees C at night in March) no cleaning, not even upon your arrival. We found a dust bin in our room full of garbage. The bathrooms are cleaned once a week, nothing works properly.
Our neighbors showed no respect to privacy and were laughing loudly at midnight. The owners, a Croatian lady and her very suspicious partner Vladimir, didn't give us any receipt, so we could only hope the money we payed went to Brussels as part of Italy's contribution to EU. The only good thing about this place is that it was very centrally located.

We stayed there for our Spring Break (March 2004) and the hosts were so welcoming and accomodating. We had a very nice room with a beautiful fresco to wake up to every morning. The location was very central, a block away from the Duomo, two blocks away from the Piazza della Signora and Mercato Nuovo and a mere 5 minute walk to Ponte Vecchio.
Also, nice restaurants and bars are really close by. We were provided with a set of keys to the pensione (which is located within an actual apartment building/complex) and there was no curfew so this provided for a very "independent" feel. The only thing is that the bathrooms are shared, but it's all worth it for the value. I will definitely come back to Proconsolo Rooms again!

We stayed at the Proconsolo Rooms in May of 2003, and we're still raving about it!! We arrived late, and I was frantic that they would give away our reservation, but when we got there a nice Spanish woman was waiting for us, and she called the owner who wanted to talk to us to welcome us and give her regrets that she was not there in person! Then the nice Spanish lady gave us a tour of the place (in Spanish- she didn't speak English or Italian, so it was fun to delve back into my brain to recall those high school Spanish classes!). It truly is a mansion!! You walk in a HUGE medeival-type door to an entrance with cathedral ceilings large enough to park a bus in. Then it's up many flights of stairs (not recommended for anyone who has difficulty walking, although there is a rickety-looking chair lift) where you enter Proconsolo Rooms. It has a hostel feel, but very clean and quiet- and no bunks! Our room was ENORMOUS with frescoed ceilings, a chandelier, and walls of bookshelves and antiques! The bed was not exactly plush, but everything was clean and decently comfortable. Our large windows looked right out onto the streets of Florence, and it was amazing feel the cool breeze through those windows on a hot May day. You are also close to EVERYTHING here. The Duomo is right next door, and the Uffizi, Accedemia and Ponte Vecchio are a few minutes stroll. If you are looking for the Italian experience, THIS IS IT!!!
