The Hotel Berna was a great place for us to be the first 4 nights in Italy. The woman who manages the hotel is extremely friendly and helpful. The breakfasts were very good. The location is great. Nadia at Hotel Berna was very helpful in providing information on obtaining tickets for local tourist attractions and how to best reach them. The room was very clean and extremely well situated near the train station. Easy walk from hotel to city center.
The excellent care Francesca and the rest of the staff take of the guests makes sure you feel like you are at home. The rooms are not very luxurious, but very characteristic with some antique furniture and very decent beds. The hotel is a bit noisy, especially with other guests slamming doors in the middle of the night (why do so many people do that?) and the construction that is happening next door never failed to wake me up at 7.30, but that is hardly the fault of the hotel. The breakfast (after two days the staff will know your exact coffee order by heart) in the small but very cozy breakfast room makes up for the downsides of this cute, informal place. On the website of the hotel there are often special deals which make the hotel one of the most economical places to stay in Florence (especially when you consider the, for Italian standards, quite extensive breakfast). This was our second stay at this hotel. The phenomenal treatment of the staff and the central location made us return.
This was the worst place I have ever encountered. Very old building, loud noises next to the rooms that means you won'be able to sleep. Bathrooms tiny. Dust and flies everywhere as per some other people's reviews. If you arrive late the whole place is very dark, dingy and poorly litten. The general standard of the rooms offered is very bad.
My wife felt unsafe in these surroundings. Definitely not worth the prices charged. Was so disappointed given the good reviews i read when choosing the place.
There will be nobody at reception if you arrive late and the staff/management will be unresponsive if you are not happy with anything. Furthermore, the hotel is unsafe: when we arrived at night there were no staff around, yet the doors were all open - anybody can walk in. Hotel safety is obviously not a priority for the Management.
This place was so bad that we left about 20 minutes after arriving.
The only good thing about the place is a central location.

what to say ?, in 20 min has had time to understand how is the city of Florence, how our humble abode: arrived in the night (after the closure of communication at the time of booking: check in before h20) I believe the h24, entered a building, opened three gates (actually found open ?!) into a room (if there was nobody at the front desk you could not have know what it was, ect) we have to stop because there are no words to his actions .... we are confused.
The hotel is just across the road from the Firenze Santa Maria Novella station, but since that is the end of the line there is no rail noise. It is on a very busy road, but the extra double glazed window kept most of the noise out. Rooms were large, furnished in an old fashioned style but is matched the room and building style perfectly. Rooms very clean with comfortable beds. The hotel is on third floor of the building. Outside looks somewhat dilapidated but inside is fine. The lift is indeed the smallest I have ever used. But as the Proprietor / receptionist (Nadia) said. Better a small lift than none!! Breakfast simple continental but plentiful. Nadia recommended a restaurant just across the road - Braciere MALATESTA - excellent.

Very helpful owner helped us over baby crib , leaving luggage and other things.. Perfect breakfast. Clean rooms. Perfect location. Thank you for everything. We are very thankful. Only minor thing is the smallest elevator in the building.
