“ideal location but not wowed on everything”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2013

The location - excellent!
The staff - international and helpful.
The terrace - a very special amenity for guests.
The breakfast - average but I seldom have high expectations for the buffet.

The room - a generous size and the rooftop view (we booked last minute and did not pay top dollar) fine, pleasant. The room was spare, comfortable and the old armoire was a charming piece. The bathroom marble was specific, not to my taste, but in good condition so I appreciated it. The room and bathroom were clean. But the soft goods...sigh. The curtains, bedding, and carpet looked cheap, worn and dated, even if they are not. The room decor lacked and does not resemble any photos of the property that I've seen posted on Trip.

All in all, the room did not detract from our positive experience in a significant way but I am amused by the adoring reviews. Clearly we chose poorly, needed to have paid more for more, or got the dud room that day.

Location, service, cleanliness win the day in our experience.

Dear Naviguesstrix,
thank you for sharing your experience with many other travellers.
I'm glad you appreciated the location, the staff, the terrace and the breakfast but at the same time, I'm sorry if the room you booked was not to your taste. Our rooms respect the traditional Florentine style in terms of decoration and athmosphere so I'm sure our style is for many but not for everybody.
I look forward to welcome you again in order to let you experience a different room category, like a Grand Deluxe or a Suite.
Best Regards,

The worst thing was the service from the porter- we had to wait at the end of the road because of road works taking place and police chatted to my hubby as to why was he parked there! Very embarrassing!!! When we questioned the porter as to where was the driver to valet our car, he just shrugged his shoulders and meandered off!!!
However the manager and receptionist were just simply lovely!!! They stayed calm with us-especially hubby as he was ill at the time of all this- they made our stay wonderful! It truly is a fabulous hotel, beautiful rooms, great views, fantastic food for breakfast- everything on the table!
I have to say the rooms are immaculate! Dust free!! Great for an allergy sufferer like me! The bed linen is beautiful, crisp, clean and soft. Turn down service was unexpected and delightful.
One cannot fault the hotel at all, great for sight seeing. Definitely a hotel to stay in- comfortable, very clean, beautifully kept and wonderful staff apart from the porter.

We have been in Firenze in January, after all well-known holidays - starting from 7th. The weather is ok, the town is not overcrowded as usual. Perfect stay. And, of course, the Hotel (Guest House) Antica Torre - absloutley unbeatable Place to stay. Great location, friendly staff ready to help, great terrace with breakfast and tea/coffee etc throughout the day... All rooms are different, but everything is decorated very nice, and you feel that all walls & items are imbrued by History of Centuries. No restaurant by itself, swimming pool and gym - but, believe me, in this case it doesn't matter.Highly recommend, wanna visit again.

I'm glad to confirm that it's extremely comfortable to visit Florence during the winter time beacuse you can really breath the real Florentine athmosphere, in fact the city is not crowded and the access to Museums is very quick, the weather is not so bad and in the restaurant you could experience the best food!

Florence is easily one of the most charming cities of the world. It explodes with some of man’s greatest artistic achievements. ‘For the serious art aficionado, a life time may not be enough to relish the works,’ warned our guide. But in three days we were able to cover quite a bit in our little Tuscan holiday. This was possible mainly because we stayed close to the main tourist attractions, next to the river Arno...and a wonderful hotel!

From the hotel, Antica Torre, by the side of the famous Arno, we were within minutes of the Piazza del Duomo. Or a breezy early evening walk away from the Piazzale Michelangelo up on the hill. Close to the bridges such as the Ponte Vecchio that leads to the 'other' David statue and gorgeous views of the historical, happening city that started life as a garrison town in Caeser's time.

The Antica is foot-steps away from the legendary Florentine restaurants such as Buca Lapi, Cammilio Trattoria and La Giostra.

When we pulled up at Antica Torre (with pre-booking), the GM had a welcome letter, a bottle of bubbly and snacks for us, family of four! The suite/rooms were spacious even if the bathrooms were a tad small. Everything was clean and comfortable. There was wi-fi, TV, fridge/bar, snacks...What's more, our rooms had great views of the historical city and the Arno. The hotel’s two terraces have stunning views of the river, hills around, the Duomo, Santa Croce, the tower of the art academy, and the city.

There’s a well-stacked bar on the terrace. A buffet breakfast buffet springs up there early in the morning.Guests with OJs, sit under the sky, take in the old attractions. The Antica Torre staff we found were most attentive at all times - courteous, and ready with tips for moving around. Importantly, everyone spoke English.

Room Tip: Get rooms facing the Arno. On May 1st every year, the river lights up with spectacular fireworks...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
We personally enjoy welcoming our guests, we wish to reinvent the concept of hospitality, and we have the inspiration to provide the warmth of home in every detail. This is how the Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni 1, Florence came to be: a tower-house built in the mid-12th century by the Guelph family of Ruggerini. At the beginning of the 20th century, this palace became "Pensione Piccioli," and quickly turned into a privileged residence for aristocrats and English writers. Closed after the Great War, Pensione Piccioli reopened in 2001, as a Period Residence called "Antica Torre di Via Tornabuoni 1." Thanks to attentive restoration to preserve all its original charm, the evocative ambiance of the Palace on Via Tornabuoni has regained life and warmth. This magnificent complex is considered one of the typical "tower-houses" of Mediaeval Florence, and, to this day, it still preserves all its characteristic architectural elements: it is an admirable example of the human ability to convert buildings built for war into oases of peace, culture and hospitality. In this ancient tower, we have created a world of harmony, privacy, and attentiveness to our guests' needs. Luxury, peace, and beauty are all in traditional Italian style, and give the concept of comfort new aesthetics. Almost all rooms enjoy an enchanting view of the city or the Arno River, and all are furnished with the highest in comfort: satellite plasma TVs, DVD players, wireless internet connection, direct line telephone, minibar, electronic safe, air conditioning and heating, private marble bath with tub and/or shower, hair dryer, slippers and shoehorns. Some of the Rooms and Suites are decorated with a Renaissance flair: with frescoes, drapes in coloured precious fabrics, bathrooms in red Alcantara or Gold Calacatta marble, and romantic four poster beds. ... more   less
