The statue is a militaristic projection of force and power and as such pales in relation to the beauty and artistry of the statues in the nearby Loggia or even the copy of David. Yet it is a great place to begin as you tour the Piazza della Signoria and take in the historical narrative as well as the beauty of the art.

Located in centre of the Piazza della Signoria, you can find the very nice statue of Cosimo I Medici, an instrumental figure in Florentine history, being the creator of the Uffizi offices, having finished the Pitt Palace and creating the Boboli Gardens. This central historical figure is immortalized in the equestrian statue that sits in Piazza della Signoria.

We really like this statue, not just because of who it represents but because of hits proximity to a large number of other excellent statues as well as its position in the centre of the square, which allows photography opportunities from more angles and times of day. The background of colourfully painted buildings and a dark blue sky, makes the Cosimo I Medici statue a very good one to see.

Other classic statues that you can see in this square include the Fountain of Neptune, the famous replica of Michelangelo's David, Hercules and Cacus. Also, in the Loggia located on the square, other great works can be found including The Rape of Sabine Women, Ercole and Centaur, Perseus, amongst others. The area is a treasure trove of classic statues, mostly from the 16th century.

Overall, this statue is less memorable than the David replica and the fantastic Fountain of Neptune, but it is well worth a brief stop and couple clicks from your camera, especially once you realize who the individual is that you are looking at. As you will almost certainly pass through Piazza della Signoria, as almost all tourists do in Florence, you'll notice this statue resting a bit in isolation from the others, in the centre of the square.
