Reviewed October 24, 2004

This was our second stop on a 2 week trip of Italy in June 2004. I had done a ton of research and landed on Abaco. It was a good choice. The location was great and near almost everything. We arrived by train and it was within walking distance. The many levels of spiraling stairs were a bit of a turnoff- especially with heavy luggage. The room was just enough, shower was located in the room(which was a bit odd), and the bathroom was down the hall, but we were not in the room much, so that was OK. The staff was very friendly, the rooms were clean and they were very accomodating. They made several dinner reservations for us. Breakfast did not amount to much, but there are several wonderful cafe's nearby. Overall- it was a good value for the price and we would stay again. It is nice to know that you a supporting a family run operation.

Management response:Responded January 20, 2005

As a staff member of the Hotel Abaco, I would like to respond to the review "Abaco referred us on without our knowledge", also in name of the hotel owner and manager, Bruno Serratore.

We are a small, family-run hotel in the heart of Florence, and often in high season we get more requests than we can accept. We know it can be very difficult for tourists to find accomodation in Florence, so instead of limiting ourselves to telling people that we are fully booked, we try to help them finding lodging elsewhere.

We usually do so recommending other hotels in the neighbourhood, similar to us in price and quality, or - if an information request was sent to us by email- by forwarding it to these hotels.
Of course we always replay to the sender before doing so; moreover, in case the other hotel should answer offering availability, they do so sending an email including the heading of the hotel and signed with the hotel's name, so that at any time it will be clear to the receiver by whom the email was sent.
For this reason we don't think it's possible that guests are referred by us to other hotels "without their knowledge".

Of course the owner and the staff members of the Hotel Abaco are awfully sorry about the misunderstanding mentioned by this Tripadvisor-User and we will do everything to avoid such unpleasant situations in the future.
We would like to thank all Tripadvisor-Users for their flattering and positive reviews. Our main concern has always been - and continues to be- the happiness and satisfaction of our guests, and we continue working with the same enthousiasm making sure that people from all parts of the world can feel at home in our hotel.

Hotel Abaco was a great place to stay. Staff...especially Bruno....were a great help with tourist questions etc. that we had. Rooms are beautifully decorated with private bathrooms in most and A/C. Breakfast is served in the A.M. for no charge if you pay cash. On the trip my girlfriend hurt her eye and Bruno's staff quickly referred us to a hospital. At Abaco you will feel at home....i will recommend it to everyone..........Enjoy!!

I did loads of research on staying in a budget hotel in Florence and eventually decided on Abaco Hotel. However, when we arrived there after travelling all day, we were politely informed by staff that they were fully booked. Confused, I dug out my email confirmation only to discover that Abaco had forwarded on my email to another hotel (La Cupola), without my permission, who had then pasted in my email, and replied confirming the booking.

The hotel (La Cupola) was one we hadn't heard of at all. It was pretty run down and grotty, however up till now I was convinced I had booked Abaco! I have since checked the web, and it doesn't appear anywhere, so basically it is exactly what we were trying to avoid! When I questioned staff at Abaco, I was informed it was up to me to check that they had forwarded on my email and that since La Cupola had signed his name, that was my fault.

In my other email bookings, various hotels responded by either saying they were fully booked or else recommended other places. Abaco had the further cheek to inform us that the same thing had happened to another couple 'just that morning'. No wonder when they are passing emails back and forth without the customer's knowledge!

My wife and I stayed at this wonderful, tiny 5 room hotel twice. The location is tremendos. If Florence were to be compared to Disneyland, it is like staying in a secrete little room above Main St. USA instead of in a standard fare room far off-site. We just walked off the train, down a couple blocks, and there we were right in the middle of it all. On the bad side, you do need to walk up several flights of stairs, the rooms are small and the breakfast needs to be improved. However, the sights, sounds and eating just outside the window are world-class and rather inexpensive. Best of all, by staying here you are helping out a personable hard working man support his family rather than a huge unapreciative coporation. If you want a true taste of ancient Florence at an excelent price, this is the place for you. If you want a cookie-cutter standard USA hotel, go elseware. Why travel to Italy?
