What a fabulous hotel, we were in room 210 at the back of the Hotel with a large room and an out door terrace it was beautiful. The staff are very knowledgeable, helpful and efficient without being intrusive. The renovation on the Hotel is excellent, modern and funky. Breakfast was of a good continental standard and was plentiful, including scrambled egg and bacon. It is situated in a good area to walk to all the tourist hotspots. It has a lift to all floors so is accessible for all. I would have no problem recommending this hotel to anyone. It is fabulous an I would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Room at the back of the Hotel due to road noise. Room 210 is great...... private terrace at the rear...

It's location is rather good than bad: it is not far from historical city center, from rail station. There are places around to eat, much better than in pure touristic places. The only minus is the bus stop right under the windows. If you are sensitive to the noise, you can know soon when the first and last buses cruises on the street.

Our first night we spend without a hot water at all, room 201. We were told that there is only one other room available this time and the hotel is fully booked, And the room is lower in the class than ours, And that if we want to stay in standard room after we will anyway have to return to 201 tomorrow after it will be fixed. We decided to stay as were quite tired after the flight. And this can happen to every hotel, especially with the Florence's old city ones which are all old. The difference is how hotel reacts on such incidents. And here is the second part: next day we were told at about 5PM that the problem is fixed. I checked that there is a water now not very carefully and returned to exploring the beautiful city. And by the night time, when we needed a shower so much it appeared that the hot water pressure is very low. We managed to take a shower, but it wasn't pleasant, was long, the water temperature was low. And it concerns me the most. After they already made inconvenience to their guests they had no will to check the work made by plumber! And no will to cover it for the guests afterwards,

Btw, next morning they moved us to another room with the words, that the guy is coming only for 1 night, 1 night without a shower looks reasonable for the hotel. Well, it's more reasonable than 4 nights without a shower though :).

I understand that I can be an exception with 201 and overbooked time, but - it's an staff attitude question and I see it unacceptable. It's Italian hotel is not an excuse, I think.

We stayed for 3 nights here and we were pleased with the hotel. The room was big- the bathroom was too. It was lovely and clean.

I recommended the hotel for a trip to Florence, we had no problems at all.

Very comfortable and very friendly hotel. Lovely young man helped me with rail tickets online and also recommended Il Gusto di Acasamia restaurant which is two minutes away and fantastic. The hotel is only minutes away from major tourist sites and couldn't be better positioned. Breakfast is fab and served until 12 so you could shoot off and see Michaelangelo's David (3 minute walk) before breakfast! Excellent position. Andrea del Castagno's Last Supper is just next door. How cool is that? We will definitely return.

We spent a week at the hotel in March 2013 when it was still called "Carolus Hotel." The cost was $136 per night including the four euro per day municipal tax we had to pay when we arrived. Our room, which was on the third floor, opened onto a spectacular view of backyards and the skyline. This was luxury living--excellent wifi, a large bathroom, a huge bed, double windows with shutters. The wallpaper is garish, not to mention the leaping lizards wallpaper in the hallway, but you soon get used to this. It goes with the garish esthetic of late gothic, early Renaissance Florence. The staff was eager to please. And as hotel breakfast's go, the Mate Luca's was superb--enough to keep you going until a late Florentine lunch. The location is also first rate. The hotel doesn't let you know, but it's right next door to Sant' Apollonia (at no. 1 Via 27 Aprile) where you can view Andrea del Castagno's Last Supper (c. 1445), the first of the great Florentine Last Suppers and a personal favorite. It's free and it could be the high point of your trip (we visited three times). The neighborhood Trattorias are reliable (La Divina and Ristorante Cafaggi di Cafaggi Andrea on Via Guelf, Academia in Piazza San Marco,) and La Cucina del Garga, just around the corner, is superb and not at all expensive by US standards. We visited in March, rainy season in Florence as it turned out, and hotel rates are low. My guess is that prices will be much higher April-October but then again higher all around, so Mate Luca would probably be a good choice in any season--assuming the very high quality of accommodation and service continues.
