“Really A 4-Star by Italian Standards!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 7, 2009

At first I was concerned about this hotel only getting 2 stars. European hotels seem to inflate their star ratings and if this one only had 2 stars, I was worried we were about to check into a crack house. Wrong! This place is great! We planed on staying 2 nights and ended up staying for 5 nights and using it as a base to go to Pisa and Siena. Our room was huge, bright, quiet and had a nice balcony. The internet connection was free and really fast. Several people who run the front desk (they change staff every few hours) are amazingly friendly and will spend a ton of time helping you with maps, restaurants, etc. The bed is comfortable and the room is clean. Bad things: it's an older hotel, the breakfast is sub-par (but super friendly!), the TV is old and grainy, they use a cleaning solution in the bathrooms that stinks, and the lift is inconvenient (we used the stairs daily instead). You have about a 15 minute walk to the tourist sights and there are a few restaurants in the area, like La Taverna, which are authentic, friendly and local. The #14 bus runs near the hotel and it will take you to the train station in about 10 minutes. I'm not sure why this place only has 2 stars - we have been traveling in Europe for 2+ months so far and it seems more like a 4-star hotel by European standards to me!

This was an excellent base for a 3 night stay in Florence. We were warmly welcomed by English speaking staff, who gave us good local information. It was ideally placed for a visit to the Fiorentini football ground, just a15min. walk away. A good bus service into the city (No 14) ran from the bottom of the road. There were local restaurants and cafes nearby. providing good reasonably priced food.
The room was comfortable and clean, with fresh towels daily. The Italian breakfast provided a good variety, each day.
We liked the location, as it was less busy than the centre of Florence, and the use of a lift if needed.

My wife and I travelled to Florence for the first time this October. In booking the hotel, we knew it was slightly outside the city center and was told by several people on the forum that we made a bad choice. They were all dead wrong! The hotel was about a 10 minute walk from the Duomo, but on a beautiful side of town. We were able to get away from the noise of the center and enjoy a neighborhood were all the locals lived. It was great to have the stroll back every night after dinner (trust me you will need it with food that good). Nonetheless, the check in was very easy and room was huge compared to what I thought. We had a king bed, good size bathroom (with basic amenities), a day bed, desk, TV and balcony! The room was kept very clean everyday by the staff. The staff was excellent and extremely helpful. They had a good basic knowledge of english, but you are in Italy and should have some idea how to conversate in Italian. At night, the staff only spoke Italian, so make your wake up calls in the morning, but we were still able to communicate then. There is always someone at the hotel to help with whatever you may need. Also, the breakfast was great and all you need. There were several choices of yogurt, crossiants, rolls, cereal and granola. You were also greeted with choices of cappucino, lattes, espresso or whatever else you would like (remember no american coffee in Italy). Overall, the hotel was perfect in everyway. I would highly recommend staying outside the tourist zone to get a real feel for how people live in Italy!

the hotel was a bit of trek from the station especially as we arrived in the baking heat with backpacks. but actually it is a short walk to reach the centre once you've reached the hotel. the lady on the desk didn't speak english but it really didn't matter because she was still super helpful. room was really big with a nice balcony and spacious bathroom. there was internet access in the rooms and a computer on the ground floor for guests to use. the breaskfast was great, especially the coffee.

There are many many good things about this hotel - the staff are friendly, breakfast is simple but all you need, bikes are cheap to hire for the day (5 euros), chamber maids clean the room daily with fresh towel and toiletries, the local area is great for shopping and for food and the access to town is brilliant with a long stroll or bus no.14.

We absolutely loved our stay - it was very enjoyable and the air con was free - bonus!!!

The only negative point is that we booked the room with a view. We actually ended up with the side room titled the blue room. We still had access to the same view but it was twin beds. We then felt a bit awkward with our neighbours who shared the terace as they obvioulsy booked a room with a view and thought they could have sole use of the one table and two chairs! I think the hotel simply needs to place some planters down the middle of the terrace and put two sets of table and chairs so that everyone can benefit from the marvelous cool air and view.

I would recommend this hotel to anyone and would stay again.

Even though we were there many years ago, everything sounds as if it is just as wonderful. We loved the staff, clean rooms, wonderful breakfast, and felt as if we were not tourists but locals because of the area and the great people at the hotel. Very near the Arno - which was wonderful.

My wife and I spent three nights at the Hotel Orcagna in early July. We paid just under $90 per night with all taxes and breakfast included.

We arrived in Florence at the Santa Maria Novella train station and were able to quickly get on the number 14 bus to Ave. Arnolfo just as described on the web site. We asked the bus driver to let us know when to get off and he did just that. It was perhaps a ten minute ride from the station. Once off the bus, it was a three minute walk to the hotel.

Check in was effortless. Our room, number 14, was ready and we were able to go straight in. The room was basic, nothing extravagent. It was clean with air conditioning and a nice small patio overlooking the garden in the back.

Breakfast was nice, not great. There was the standard assortment of cold selections, bread, cereal, yogurt, and granola as well as made to order coffee. The service was very friendly each day starting with a "buon giorno". The attendant even insisted that we take something with us when we checked out early on our last day.

The location of the hotel meant we had to take the bus into town each morning. This was no problem as we were able to buy our bus tickets at the front desk and had a map with the numbers written on it for us. It took no more then five to ten minutes to get to the Duomo from the hotel. At the end of the day, we would take the bus or walk back. It took about fifteen minutes to walk from San Croce.

We enjoyed the atmosphere in the neighborhood around the hotel. It's definitely not as touristy as central Florence which was fine with us. We ate at a ristorante close by, washed our clothes at the laundromat, shopped at the local supermarket, and learned to ride the bus around. All of these things made us feel more connected to the locals of Florence.

Bravo! Hotel Orcagna.
