“Loved it!”
Reviewed July 28, 2012

The people, the dining, the shopping, the history - wonderful! Didn't have nearly enough time here as was on an organized tour. I will return.

“Amazing Dante's statue”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

Piazza Santa Croce is one of the main squares of the centre of Florence and is located by the Basilica of Santa Croce that overlooks the square. You can find over there incredible statue of Dante Alighieri. I coudn't stop admiring that.

“People Watching”
Reviewed July 19, 2012

This is a great place for people watching. most Plazza's are. Whether it is during the day or at night most people are just milling about. It is also great to grab some food and sitting in the open plaza as most restaurants will charge you a 'servicio' charge if you choose to sit inside or on their patio. But most of the 'non-fancy' restraints have great take-away options.

“Maintains its use as a public venue”
Reviewed June 20, 2012

I understand that the name “Croce” derives from a ball game played by the ancients on this square. This would explain the open rectangular area without any statues or fountains in the middle to get in the way.
I was reminded that this square still serves as a venue for public activities, when on my last visit I discovered rows of inflatable plastic structures and steel barriers... see my photos. It´s a rather strange juxtaposition of the ancient against the modern.

Seems like it was being used as the administration centre for a public fun run, combined with a mixed trade stand exhibition. Free samples of various products were on offer, along with displays of the latest Garmin navigation systems and a Citroen C5.

Despite the incongruity of the scene, it is good to see the descendents of the elders still using the same square.

“we found a great place here to eat outside, and will go back”
Reviewed June 15, 2012

My husband and I started our sight-seeing trip of Florence from Piazza Santa Croce, as part of a day trip organised by RCCL from our cruise ship LIBERTY OF THE SEAS. Lovely place to eat or people watch. The weather was hot & humid so at the end of our 4 hour walk round the entire city (!), we decided to take lunch at BOCCAMAMA. We had a lovely pasta dish of Rigatoni with local spicy sausage and black truffles washed down with a bottle of ARROCCO di CAMPOLI Chianti Classico 2008 and together with a bottle of water and coffee, I think the bill was around 50 euros . A tip for wine lovers; to select the best Chianti, we were told to look for the black rooster sign on the neck of the bottle and we were not disappointed with our selection !! It was a busy day at the restaurant, but the staff were very polite and worked hard to please everyone. It's a very popular place, but worth a visit and I'm so glad we waited for a table. We'll pop in again next time we're in Florence !!
