Owner description: This synagogue, one of the largest in Europe, was built between 1874 and 1882 in eclectic Moresque style by architects Marco Treves, Mariano Falcini,Vincenzo Micheli. The museo was set up on 1982 in the same building to display ritual objects, dating from XVI to XX Centuries and documentation regarding the history of the community. In the new section on 2007 was set up a room devoted to the memorial of contemporary history included the Shoa.

Why no one mentions this beautiful synagogue is beyond me. Its not in any guide books or mentioned on the tourist maps. I could see the gorgeous patina copper dome from my hotel and had to know what it was. Moorish influenced architecture and beautifully appointed. Terrific museum upstairs. Be prepared to go through a metal detector and remember its closed for services on Saturday. I am not Jewish, or even religious for that matter, but this historic site is not to be missed.

For Jewish travelers and non Jewish travelers there is always a hidden story in an ancient city that has a synagogue and museum. In this case we were not disappointed,

Be ready to go through a metal detector, an unfortunate byproduct of our modern times. But once you are inside the gate, it is just breathtaking. The history, architecture, and presence are worth exploring here.

We walked lovely, winding streets from our apartment on the Duomo plaza to the synagogue. Although not nearly as antique as the synagogue in Cavaillon, France, it was outstanding in its architecture and design, and all well-preserved. The museum upstairs housed some beautiful sacramental ornaments.

Definitely worth a stroll and visit.

This is an extremely interesting site if you are interested in the continuing Jewish presence in Italy for the last 2000 years. The synagogue shows that the Florentine Jews also had their moment of greatness and were very successful. The Moorish influence on the architecture is very beautiful and also shows how the Jews were influenced by the Moors. If you have little interest in history, this site will probably hold little interest for you.

after reading all the reviews in TripAdvisor we were expecting much more from, this site. must admit parts of the buildings are actually quite interesting but I would not suggest investing any time or money going there
