Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: This 19th century piazza has undoubtedly the best panoramic view of Florence. The square is decorated with copies of Michelangelo's sculptures, but it's the view people come here to see.

After a steep but picturesque walk up to the Piazzale on our first evening in Florence, we made it to the top and were greeted with the most phenomenal sunset view of Florence. If you want to take pictures that look like postcards, this is the place to do it! It does get pretty busy though, even in winter, so bear that in mind. A stunning place though, really worth the walk up.

We were fortunate to visit here twice, both times making sunset and then nightfall. I would encourage everyone to try and do this atleast once, there are no words that can really do it justice. This is a classic 'must experience for yourself' moment.

The walk up from the Oltrarno side of the Ponte Vecchio is steep but rewarding with two routes - we went up past Negroni bar taking the road, and down taking the steps around Viale G Poggi. At the top, along with a bronze reproduction of David, are a number of souvenier stalls and vans selling cold drinks, beer, prosecco and ice cream. A beer and prosecco cost E8 which was fair, however second visit we brought our own and sat on the steps near David taking in the view.

Bus No12 and No13 are options if the walk is to much or the weather against you however you get there though, this is imo 'the must do' regarding Florence, there infront of you is the countryside, Pitti Palace, Arno, Ponte Vecchio, Duomo, Palazzo Vechio, Santa Croce, the stadio and Fiesole and everything else in between before you.

Take pictures of the city below. Walk in the garden above and have an icecream! Beautiful at sunset. You can buy a firenze t-shirt for you kid. Alot of street vendors in the piazza. And if your lucky you may be there when there's a concert or mtv taping.

A bus from the train station will stop right in front of the piazza. Piazzale Michelangelo is located above Florence. Visit in the evening for the sun set view or visit in the morning for almost no crowds. Beautiful view of Florence at anytime of the day. Most aerial photographies of Florence were taken from this spot. Walk down hill through a park to Basilica di Santa Croce. It is a bit of a walk but very manageable. Or take the same bus back to the train station.
