“City Camping at Its Best”
Reviewed August 24, 2008

If you don't like insects, the cold/heat , communal toilets or close neighbours, then don't choose to stay at Camping Michealangelo (or indeed any campsite in an urban area). If you enjoy unique experiences, meeting new people and the outdoors then I can most certainly recommend it.

Some friends and I stayed here for 3 nights in July, and all 3 of us were highly impressed with what we encountered (which was exactly as advertised). We stayed in a 3 person house tent which was perfectly comfortable and secure (and we had no problems with intruding animals or insects), with the luxury of a laminated wooden floor. Obviously there was no electricity, but the nearby toilets had plenty of sockets if in need. There was little space between the tents, but in all honesty, why hang around outside your tent when the whole of Florence awaits you?

The toilets weren't great, but were acceptable, and if remembering to take toilet roll from the dispenser to the toilet is too difficult then remember to buy your own. It goes without saying that the showers are best avoided at peak times (early mornings, bed times), but that's only to be expected on a communal campsite. The little cafe (which was surprisingly decently priced), complete with internet, has the loveliest view of Florence, contested only be the square a mere five minutes up the road, where the view is simply breathtaking.

With the views, of course, come a steep climb, and ascending the slopes and stairs to the campsite can leave you somewhat breathless after a hard day's sightseeing. The view on the way up is great however, and we saw turtles, frogs, bats and all manner of wildlife on the way! I am only averagely active and didn't struggle too much with the walk, but there is also the bus for the less eneregetic, although it takes quite a long route round.

The staff were friendly and informative, and its worth bearing if mind that if you're from the UK (or another country without ID cards) they require one proof of identity from each group that isn't a passport, so ensure someone brings along their driving license. What we loved most about this campsite was the sheer variety of people staying there. Alongside the hoards of European and American backpackers there were families with young children and older couples, all revelling in the atmosphere. The cafe plays out music until 12 am, so although the campsite can be a little noisy at night time, you can't begrude the great atmosphere it creates. If you are anything like we were, your sight seeing will leave you so tired out that you could sleep through anything anyway!

My friends and I found this campsite a really unique experience with a fantastic atmosphere, and thought that the price did the quality of the services justice. The unparallelled views are a huge selling point, and I would certainly recommend this site to like minded people who are looking to have fun rather than travel in the lap of luxury.

Having stayed at another Camping plus campsite in Venice, I thought a little bit of improving could be made on this one not that it had many problems but I will list ones I would have liked changed.
- toilet paper not it cubicle but outside in hall, no good when have the trots!! Be prepared!!!
- tents have no power so bring a torch 8they do supply little LED lights though- mine ran out of power)
- market closes too early, 8pm from memory.
- bar closes at 11pm.
-4 washing machines but only 2 dryers 8only 1 worked when I was there). €3.50 each

The staff seemed very nice.
The view from campsite is excellent, 15min walk down to city. Took 20mins to walk to trainstation with backpack on, catch bus 12 up though its quiet steep when you have a heavy load on.

great location. a few blocks, and you've got a great view of a picturesque tuscany. if all you need is a place to sleep, and you're not a light sleeper, then you'll be fine. i am an outgoing person, but i personally wouldn't come back here. i was there during the hot italian weather, and it was very uncomfortable. i mainly picked this place because it was the cheapest i could find.

the bathroom's dreary. there is a bar/restaurant where you can meet fellow travelers. please note...it really is camping without you having to bring your own tent.

This is quite a nice campsite that I think would be really great in summer. We stayed in one of the house tents and it was a bit cold for this time of year. However, we were provided with extra blankets when we asked.
Other than that the campsite has a restaurant (basic, but fine), market, lockers for luggage and charging electrical things, atm, and the staff were all quite helpful.
The bathrooms (womans) were not the best, but we just got on with it. I'd recomment this place if you're looking for something cheap that is quite decent and a bit unique.
There are lovely views from the terrace of the restaurant, it was great to sit there first thing in the morning and again in the evenings after a hard days site seeing.

Stayed here for 3 nights at the start of our trip this summer.

We stayed in one of the house tents which other reviewers have mentioned, ours was fine and like a palace compared to a tent! We were a tad lucky though, ours was on it's own and some seemed very tightly packed together.

I agree with the female Irish reviewer, i am 24 and love a drink etc, but the people mainly on these Plus campsites are mainly loud, drunken Aussies and Americans! Who only like to keep to cliquey groups!

The toilets/showers did become over crowded and a bit smelly, but not that bad. Tip from my girlfriend, females should use the showers at the baby changing end, they seemed to be less busy than the others.

The site is nicely located, although make sure you get a bus there, as it is at the top of a very large hill. It is 2 minutes away from the Piazza Michaelangelo, where the view of the city is unbeatable.

Also use the supermarkets in the town, as like most campsites they enjoy adding 100% to the prices of everything!

We stayed here just one night on our trip around Europe and after several exceptional camping grounds Campeggio Michelangelo was fairly average.
The best things about this place were one: the view from the terrace restaurant! and two: the location right by Florence couldn't be better.
The toilets are all clustered close together and could be quite a long walk from some parts of the camp.
The toilets were quite smelly at times and remember to either take your own toilet paper in or get it from the rolls outside the loos!
I suppose the thing that sticks in my mind were the size of the ants here! we were enjoying a beer on the terrace and just watched these ants take apart this huge moth and carry it off in just minutes - disturbing :) haha.

This campsite was in a lovely location and the walk to the city centre only takes about 20 mins going down and about 35 mins going back up. The reception staff are friendly and helpful. However these are the only good things we have to say about it. My boyfriend and I booked this on a website which advertised a ROOM with shared bathroom- what we got was a very basic TENT with two beds in it. My boyfriend kept falling through his bed during the night as the planks under the mattress kept giving way(He is 12 stone). As another reviewer said the tent is on a wooden platform (which the beds can and do easily fall off) unsealed at the end so creepy crawlies do get in. We had to get out of bed every morning at about nine as the tent quickly
became intolerably stifling, even in the early morning heat - this is a disaster when you've been out late the night before. The tents were very much on top of each other and you have no area where you can sit out in front of the tent- the lamp beside our row of tents was broken so we were in complete darkness when we came back every night. All of this I could have tolerated having frequently camped before- however the organisation of the place was a mess. There is a bar which also serves food and sells bus tickets-It is ridiculously understaffed and you constantly have to queue- The bar staff seem incapable of multi-tasking and a girl frequently stood cleaning glasses completely oblivious to the lengthy queue of customers waiting to be served. We ordered food here one day- we got two microwaved pasta dishes, both icy cold in the middle costing 4.50 euro(a nice pasta in a good restaurant downtown will cost between 5 and seven euros). When I went back to complain there was a queue 10 people long with no one behind the counter. This is the only campsite I have ever been in where I have always had to queue for the bathroom, no matter what time of the day or night. The toilets smelled and frequently had no toilet paper. There is no soap provided to wash your hands. Any dealings with reception involved a long queue. This is very definitely not a place for families as it has been completely taken over by the party crowd-I'm 25, Irish and love a drink or 10, but this place was even a bit too in your face for me. I know a lot of dreadlocked 17-25 yearolds have probably had the drunken time of their lives here, but it is most definitely not for the fainthearted!
